Winter Storm Whiffs on Bridgeport, Most of Area, but Potential Problems Remain in Form of Black Ice

Areas in and around Bridgeport, Harrison County and other sections of North Central West Virginia were expected to be greeted this morning with a few inches of snow and some blustery conditions as part of the back end of Winter Storm Stella. The Nor’easter that is dumping large amounts of snow along the U.S. East Coast, however, didn’t do much damage as was forecasted for the area.

“We were calling for two to three inches of snow for the lowlands, mostly in the morning,” said WDTV Meteorologist Kate Mantych. “When you looked out the window this morning you could tell it was obviously not there.”

The reason for the area being spared almost the entire brunt of what was anticipated by local forecasts as well as the National Weather Service was the result of a system opposite or the Nor’easter that is on the East Coast.

“A low pressure system in Ohio that was moving to the east was transferring energy … Our area got skipped because of it and was replaced with dryer, warmer area. When there was snow falling, it was dry and warm enough it wasn’t reaching the ground,” said Mantych. “The good news is that I don’t think people mind too much when the conditions are better and it is okay, for the most part to be out driving.”

Driving, though, could be a problem tonight, she said. While scattered flurries will continue and accumulations outside of a dusting are the most likely outcome with snowfall, there will be some issues with the system.

“We’ll be dropping into the teens tonight and with the winds you’ll have wind chills in the single digits,” said Mantych. “With rain that we had this morning that hasn’t dried up, black ice is going to be a problem for people out on the roads. Everyone needs to take caution if they’re going to be out on the roads as the temperatures drop.”
