World War II Veteran, Author, President and CEO of Glass Company, Odbert Linder, Passes Away at 99

Odbert Delmas “O.D.” Linder, 99, of Bridgeport passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017 at River Oaks in Clarksburg. He was born in the Fink Community of Lewis County on April 9, 1918, a son of the late John Paul and Elsie (Gibson) Linder. Mr. Linder is survived by his wife of 71 years, Penny Linder. 
 
In addition to his wife Mr. Linder is survived by one son, John M. Linder and wife Lynne of Venice, FL and Bridgeport; one daughter, Pam E. Hanlan of Bridgeport; six grandchildren: Gregory Linder and wife Barbara of Clarksburg, Amy Eakle of Nutter Fort, Erin Hanlan and partner Paul Savage IV of Bridgeport, Matthew Hanlan of Bridgeport, Ben Hanlan and wife Kristen of Bridgeport, and Kalin Hanlin also of Bridgeport; eight great-grandchildren: Brandon Hanlan and partner Kayla Kniceley of Bridgeport, Paul Savage V of Bridgeport, Eliza Hanlan of Bridgeport, Liam Eakle of Nutter Fort, Madelynn Eakle of Nutter Fort, Aspen Linder, Nate Linder, and Grant Linder all of Clarksburg; and two great-great grandchildren: Briley Hanlan and Hudson Hanlan both of Bridgeport. 
 
In addition to his parents O.D. was preceded in death by four siblings: Henry Linder, Neva Moore, Charles Linder, and Arlene Leggett. 
 
Mr. Linder graduated high school as well as business college, and then went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army 83rd Field Artillery during WWII. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and helped lead his team during a time in which horse drawn equipment came before the use of motorized armor. He in fact authored a book about his experiences in the Army during WWII entitled, “From Horses to Armor.” As a civilian Mr. Linder was an accountant, serving over 40 years with Fourco Glass and retiring as its President and CEO. Along with his wife Penny, O.D. co-authored four genealogy books on their family history. He also compiled a pictorial of his family’s history dating back many years. O.D. was very active in theatre during his high school years, and also loved reciting poetry, which he was very good at doing from memory alone. O.D. was a very intelligent man with a superior memory, and enjoyed talking and socializing with everyone. He was a member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church.
 
Family and friends will be received at the Bridgeport United Methodist Church (251 Worthington Dr. Bridgeport, WV 26330) on Monday, June 19, 2017 from 10am until the funeral hour at 11am with Rev. Dr. Ken Ramsey presiding. Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bridgeport UMC Church.
