Off the Shelf: Beat the Heat, Recharge and Re-Connect in the Cool Refuge of the Library

By Sharon Saye on July 04, 2012 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

With the Weather Channel predicting another week of 90 plus days, let me remind you that the library can be a cool refuge from this onslaught of heat.  As of this writing the building has electricity and air conditioning.  It has Internet access for everyone without power if you need to make contact with loved ones.  Also, just ask a staff member at either circulation desks and we will be glad to plug in your devices to get you recharged.

The library has comfortable chairs, and loads of entertainment possibilities.  Besides books which have one true advantage over all modern technology in that they don’t require electricity, the library has vast collections of DVDs and music CDs as well as current issues of local newspapers and current and back issues of magazines.  For those without electricity, DVDs and CDs might still be out of reach, but books and magazines are not.

For those without electricity please remember your library and stop in for a visit just to cool off.  The library is open from 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. from Monday through Friday, and noon until 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Comic book and action movie fans helped make “The Avengers” movie the box-office hit of the summer.  It is now third on the all-time highest grossing movies right behind “Avatar” and “Titanic” with $600 million plus in earnings domestically and 1.4 billion world-wide.
Fans of the movie might want to take the opportunity to watch the individual superhero films that the library has on DVD.  They include “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2” as well as “Thor” and “Captain America.”

Graphic novel fans can enjoy the many volumes distilled from the comics starring Iron Man, Thor and the Avengers.  “Road to Marvel Avengers” helps set the stage for the movie with an expanded adaptation of the original Iron Man featuring bonus scene not in the movie.  Next, find out what happened between the two Iron Man movies as well as watch Black Widow, Nick Fury and Agent Coulson in espionage action.  Finally, learn where Steve Rogers got his inspiration and set him on his path to becoming the First Avenger.

And for truly passionate fans, you won’t want to miss”The Avengers: The Ultimate Guide to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”  This book goes back to the beginning when Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the team in 1963.  The original lineup consisted of Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp.  Captain America joined up in issue #4.  There have been over 100 members over the fifty year history.

Just like the movie, Loki was the first Super Villain that the Avengers encountered, but they have since had to fight off a horde of foes including Kang the Conqueror, Baron Zemo, Ultron, the Masters of Evil and Count Nefaria.

The book details all the heroes and villains, with summaries of some of the key issues as well a bright, colored drawings taken from the comics.  Moving chronologically, fans can see how members of The Avengers changed through the decades as well as their storylines.  There is even a chapter on Alternative Avengers including the alternate Earth where every Avenger is a flesh-eating zombie.

So for all those millions who enjoyed the movie, you can satisfy your curiosity about all the characters and sub-characters with “The Avengers: The Ultimate Guide to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”
