Off the Shelf: Closing in on Mid-Way Point of Bridgeport Public Library Renovations

By Sharon Saye on August 01, 2018 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The contractors are finishing up the lighting in the front of Bridgeport Public Library. The shelving units for the new books, DVDs, and magazines just went back in place Sunday night and so, we will be slowly reloading these shelves.  With 8,000 DVDs, this will take a little time, but the front should be back to normal this week.

We experienced a loss of Internet service in that section during this period and the City will be running new wiring to get it back up.  This is scheduled for early this week.  Until it is back to normal, there are Internet access computers in the back of the library.

Also, since they will be putting new electrical access in the center of the library during the second phase of the project, we have had to unload some of the bottom shelves in the fiction and nonfiction sections and load them on the computer carrels in the front.  This does make finding books a challenge, so please ask for help.

We have been buying new books and DVDs, but since packing up shelves and moving offices is ongoing, processing of these new materials is slowed down.  If we don’t have a new book that you want, please ask at the desk or fill out a request to purchase.

This week, the contractors will be working in the center of the library where the main book stacks are.  Since they work at night, these stacks are open during the day, but since the lighting is one of the last parts of the project they do in each section, it is a little dim.  We have flashlights just ask at the desk.  They expect to be in this center section for most of August, then move to the back section followed by the hallways and the conference room.

The children’s area is getting new LED lighting, but that will be a direct replacement and won’t involve as much disruption.  So, the children’s area is probably the one area that will change the least in the renovations.

Renovations are expected to be completed the end of September, so we are closing in on the half-way point
