Off the Shelf: Holiday Downtime with a Good Book

By Sharon Saye on December 20, 2017 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The library will be closing at noon on December 21 for the City Christmas party and remain closed until December 26 when our regular hours resume.  The library will also be closed on January 1st for the New Year holiday.  Just remember the library has an extensive array of services available through the Internet including downloadable books, audios, music, magazines and databases.  These services are available 24/7.

The Bridgeport Garden Club decorated another tree for the library’s young adult section.  This one is done in bright blues and reds; our thanks go to Lenore Hinkle and Lillian Crites for this festive treat.

I’ve noticed that readers seem to fall in one of two categories at Christmas.  One group is so busy that they’ve had to put their reading on hold, but intend to take advantage of the winter doldrums to get caught up.  The other group is busy, but plans to take advantage of their holiday break to curl up with some eggnog and a good book.  For either group, here are some recommendations for books published in 2017 that will be perfect way to start a new year.

Ken Follett continues the story begun in the bestselling “The Pillars of Fire” with another massive volume in the series, “A Column of Fire,” while another big name author, Dan Brown, returns to his favorite character, Robert Langdon for “Origin.”  The extremely prolific James Patterson also returns to one of his favorites with “The People vs. Alex. Cross.”

John Grisham takes a look a student loan scams in “The Rooster Bar” while David Baldacci’s most lethal characters are put in mortal danger when they go hunting for Blue Man in “End Game.”  Janet Evanovich puts Stephanie Plum through her paces in “Hardcore Twenty-Four” and John Sandford’s Virgil Flowers returns to the town of Trippton, Minnesota, to solve a case that roots twenty years back in “Deep Freeze.”

Lee Child’s “The Midnight Line,” Danielle Steel’s “Fairytale, Nelson Demille’s “The Cuban Affair,” Clive Cussler’s “The Romanov Ransom,” Michael Connelly’s “Two Kinds of Truth,” and J. D. Robb’s “Secrets in Death” all prove why they are such popular authors and readers should mark them on their TBR lists.

For writers who are lesser known, but broke through in 2017, mark these books for some quality reading: “We Were the Lucky ones” by Georgia Hunter, “The Dry” by Jane Harper, “The Bear and the Nightingale” by Katherine Arden, “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman, “My Absolute Darling” by Gabriel Tallent and “American War” by Omar El Akkad.

If you are still stuck for something to read, just Google “Best Books of the Year,” and you will have more choices than your lists can hold.
Happy Holidays from the library staff and the library board.
