Off the Shelf: Library Renovations Starting Soon; Expected Closures and Cancellations

By Sharon Saye on March 14, 2018 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

The library’s proposed renovations are moving ahead; with a little luck work should begin in April.  Although we are going to try to keep the library open as much as possible, there will be times that will not be possible.  We will post that information on the websites and in the media.

Since they will be replacing our current ceiling and lighting first, it will be a little hard to function between the noise and the wrapped bookstacks.  We have had to cut back on our regular programming and it looks like the renovations will impact our annual summer reading program.  Amy Eakle, our children’s librarian, is working on ways to minimize the conflict and we are discussing doing a shortened, but intense week of programs instead of the usual six weeks.

Our regular annual book sale, the first week in June, is off for this year.  We will hold a book sale in October.  With all the renovations we will have no place to store all your donations until we are done.  Although we very much appreciate all the generous gifts of books, every precious inch is going to be packed with stuff while we re-carpet.   And we are going to be using the conference room to store tables, chairs, book carts, book shelves, display racks, audio-visual equipment and materials, etc.

Currently, there are three tables of books for sale in the hallway at only .25 cents each.  We will be keeping that going throughout March, but after that they will be packed up and donated to the Clarksburg Public Library for their book sale this spring.

We still have copies of Federal tax forms and booklets for 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ.  If you need tax assistance, please call the Senior Citizen’s Center and they can schedule an appointment for you.  Some of the forms are getting limited, so I wouldn’t delay in picking up what you need.  Plus, they will be working on our electrical and network connections when they pull up and replace the carpeting, so I wouldn’t count on the public access Internet computers being available all the time as well.

Spring this year is going to be chaotic so let me remind you that the library has a robust collection of online databases which include the WVDELI, downloadable books, audiobooks and streaming video, as well as Freegal, downloadable music, and Zinio, downloadable magazines.  We also have access to almost forty different databases and online services.  So, although the building may have only limited access this spring, the library offers significant resources online 24/7 unimpeded by construction noise, dust and debris.
