Off the Shelf: Prepping for the Upcoming Library Renovations

By Sharon Saye on April 25, 2018 from Off the Shelf via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Preparations have begun for the upcoming renovations.  Scheduled to start in early June, the project has four stages and so we have begun packing up.  The classical music CDs are already in boxes and headed toward storage.  The West Virginia reference collection is slowly being packed while older magazines are being transferred into a closet.

We will wait until shortly before the renovations start to pack up the DVD collection.  Since it is a heavily circulated item, we will try to leave out the most popular items, but with over 8,000 DVDs a lot of them will end up in boxes while the construction company starts on the front of the library.

Since the project is moving through the library in stages, sections will have to be packed and then unpacked.  The last section to be worked on includes the hallways as well as the conference room.  Since the conference room is the only open room where we can stack boxes, it is unavailable for programs and meetings until July.

This, of course, affects our programming schedule.  Many of our continuing programs such as the Colorful Yarns and the reading groups will continue in various other parts of the library.  This year our very active summer reading programs are cancelled, but we will be offering ReadSquared, an online reading program.  We are currently in the process of setting it up, but there will be book recommendations, reading lists and prizes.  More information will be forthcoming.  The nice thing about ReadSquared is that it is a book program that lasts all year long and fits each individual reader.

In May, adults still can participate in “Tea & Talk” every Mondays at 1 p.m.  This group discusses current programs on PBS and begins the month with “Unforgotten” and ends with “Little Women.”  Colorful Yarns for those interested in knitting, crochet or needle arts meets on May 1, 15, and 29th at 6:30 p.m.  Ereader workshops continue May 9 and 22nd at 2 p.m. to help users download eBooks, eAudiobooks, and digital magazines from the library for free.

Book Talk members will discuss “Beneath a Scarlet Sky” by Mark T. Sullivan about a normal Italian teenager who is pulled into World War II as a member of the German Army.  Book Talk is scheduled for Wednesday, May 16th at 4 p.m.  Please see Joanne at the library if you wish to borrow a book.

The mystery book club, “Read in Red,” meets on May 18th at noon to discuss “No Rest for the Dead” written by a group of all-star mystery writers such as Sandra Brown, J.A. Jance, Jeffery Deaver, Kathy Reichs, etc.  Ask Sarah for a book if you wish to join this book group.

A new book club is forming on May 24th at noon; the first book is “The Great Alone” by Kristin Hannah.  The exact focus of this book group is still nebulous.  Ask Sarah for a book if you would like to participate.
