Off the Shelf: The Busy Holiday Season at the Library

By Sharon Saye on November 29, 2017 from Off the Shelf

December is now upon us and the library like everyone else will be a busy place.  November 27 through December 2 is Fine Free Week.   Overdue items returned in the designated week will not incur late fees.  This offer does not apply to charges on patron accounts for items returned outside of Fine Free Week or to lost or damaged items.

The musical talent in our community is on display with three concerts from the Bridgeport schools.  The Bridgeport High School Choir and Chorus will perform their annual holiday concert on Tuesday, December 5 at 6 p.m.  The Bridgeport Orchestra will be performing the next night, December 6 at 6 p.m.  And the Bridgeport Jazz Ensemble will fill the library with bright music on Tuesday, December 13 at 6 p.m.  The concerts last about one hour and the parking lot fills up fast.

Tea & Talk continues on Monday, December 4 at 1 p.m. with a discussion of “Maudie” about an arthritic Nova Scotia woman who works as a housekeeper while she hones her skills as an artist.

Members of the mystery book club called “Read in Red” will be celebrating the holiday with a discussion of “A Duty to the Dead” by Charles Todd on December 8th at noon.  Please see Sarah to find out more.  Book Talk members will also finish the year with a Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 13 at 5 p.m.

Our regular eReader workshops continue on December 12 and 27 at 2 p.m.  Registration is required.  Bring your Kindle, iPad or Android device and your library card and learn how to download eBooks, eAudiobooks, and digital magazines from the library for free.

Teens meet on Monday nights and kick off the month on December 4 at 5:30 p.m. with a screening of the movie “Fallen” about a young girl who finds herself in a reform school after therapy since she was blamed for the death of a young boy.  Teen Read continues on December 11 at 6 p.m. with the title, “The Smell of Other People’s Houses” by Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock.  And they conclude the month with another movie the science fiction blockbuster, “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” on December 18 from 5:30-8 p.m.

Children can start off the month with “Books and Barks” in which children get to read to Mountaineer Therapy Dogs.  Registration is required for the Saturday, December 2 program from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Story Laboratory reflects the holidays with Cookie Decorating on Thursday, December 7 at 6 p.m. and the children’s reading group, “Pizza and Pages,” is reading “Winterfrost” by Michelle Houts.  Registration is required.  The program runs on December 14 at 6 p.m. and Kids’ Movie Night presents “Cars 3,” on Friday, December 15 at 6 p.m.  Story time continues for children under the age of three on Fridays at 10:30 p.m.

The library will be closing at 12 p.m. on December 21 for the City Christmas party and will remain closed through the holiday weekend.  Regular hours resume on December 26 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturdays.  The library will also be closed on January 1st for the New Year holiday.
