Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Fast Break Basketball Season Just Around the Corner; Registration Open through Sept. 15

Bridgeport Parks and Recreation is once again gearing up for the popular Fast Break Basketball League for middle school and high school students.
Registration is open through Sept. 15 with evaluations scheduled for Sept. 21, said Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Joe Shuttleworth.

For those planning to try out for school teams, the program serves as a good pre-season activity and feedback indicates that players have a lot of fun with the league. For those who have played recreation leagues as kids, but don’t want to play school ball, it’s a good alternative.

"That's true especially for kids who come up through our K-3 program and play Jerry West, staying active for all that time and then aging out of the program," Shuttleworth said. "They hit this middle school/high school age group and that's where a lot of kids tend to drop off organized sports because they don't want to play school teams or don't make their school teams. This helps them stay active."

The real goal is truly recreation, Shuttleworth said.
"We just want to provide a fun opportunity for kids to get moving, play a team sport and have fun," he said. "We do our best to try to create team parity and include everyone."

The Sept. 21 evaluations will be held at Heritage Christian School gymnasium. Middle school division is at 6 p.m. with high school to follow at 7 p.m. Thereafter, coaches will hold a draft and the season will get under way Sept. 25, running through Nov. 9.

"We've always had two levels of play - the more serious ball players and some who just want to have a good time," Shuttleworth said. "That's why we do the draft the way we do so we don't have high school starters playing against kids who are just out for the fun. We do our best to mix the skill levels up and coaches normally do a pretty good job of that."

Volunteer coaches are needed. Interest can be indicated on the registration form.

There are 10 officiated games scheduled, which will be preceded by a short practice season, Shuttleworth said.

Middle school games will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and high school games on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Registration is $85 per player. That includes a team T-shirt.

Registration forms are available at the Benedum Civic Center or can be downloaded HERE. For more information, call Bridgeport Parks & Recreation at 304-842-8240.
