New Bridgeport Parks and Rec's Digitial Display Sees Plenty of Positive Early Community Feedback

By Jeff Toquinto on December 08, 2017 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Not there was much doubt, but if there was Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Director Don Burton admits that it would have been erased after just a few days. It appears that the new double-sided, computerized digital display marquis in front of the Benedum Civic Center is a hit.

“Everybody really like it. It’s bright and it’s visible day and night,” said Burton. “If you’re stuck by a train or if traffic is moving slow you can see a whole lot of events. It’s already serving the purpose it was intended to serve.”

The new sign has been in service for a little more than a week as it went into place just before the city’s annual “Light Up Night.” It replaced the marquis that required messages to be replaced manually and had been in place for a few decades.

“It was kind of archaic and it was limited in the amount of messages because you could basically do two at a time; one on each side,” said Burton. “This also allows for staff to save time because doing it by hand wasn’t necessarily difficult, unless the weather was an issue, but it was time consuming.”

Now, Burton said he has access to change the message from the comfort and convenience of his desk. The same situation exists for Deputy Parks Director Joe Shuttleworth and his staff.

“Since it is computer based we can now do it from our desktop,” said Burton. “Even more critical is we can now publicize multiple events. We can do our Parks events as well as events many groups in the community want to publicize that was difficult before. If there’s something going on in Bridgeport now this sign allows us to publicize it.”

Burton said another application that it can be utilized is for emergency services and school closures or delays. He said due to the short time needed to post to the sign applications will likely continue to be added for its use.

Burton did say there are a few issues relating to the software in the new sign. He said he hopes to have that taken care of as soon as possible.

The new sign cost $17,000 and was purchased from Third Millennium Marketing. Costs were covered in the current fiscal year budget.
