Bridgeport Parks and Recreation’s Little Explorers are gearing up for the first class of 2018. Program Coordinator/Instructor Anita Jesmer said the topic for the series which runs Jan. 17-Feb. 7 is “Endangered Species” focusing on polar bears, rhinos, elephants and tigers.

“First, we’ll find out what the word ‘endangered’ means and find out why these species have become endangered and ways we can possibly help,” she said.

The study of endangered species is always a popular one, Jesmer said. Children who have participated in the “Endangered Species” class will receive new information this time around as new species will be studied.

The hands-on learning will include craft activities such as the making of bobble head elephants, polar bear masks, rhino necklaces and tiger puppets.

The class is open to children ages three to eight and the cost for the four-week course is $35 per student. There are two class time options: 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays Jan. 17 through Feb. 7 or 10-11 a.m. Thursdays Jan. 18 through Feb. 8.

Registration can be made at the office of the Benedum Civic Center or by calling 304-842-8240. Registration is also open for the Little Explorers unit to follow. That unit, Jesmer said, will focus on dinosaurs.

“We’ll study pre-historic times, different dinosaurs and how they became extinct. We’ll do a ‘dinosaur dig’ and we’ll also create fossils,” she said. “This is always a popular class and it fills up quickly.”

The dinosaur class runs Feb. 14/15 through March 7/8 with the same class time options available.

Jesmer reminds parents that Little Explorers observes the inclement weather policy of Harrison County Schools.  In the case of a Harrison County school delay, the morning session of Little Explorers will still take place, but if there is cancellation of school, there is no Little Explorers class that morning. In the case of early-dismissal, parents will receive a phone call as to whether Little Explorers will meet that evening, Jesmer said. Any cancelled Little Explorers classes will be made up.
