Registration Open for Harry Potter Food and Fun Summer Camp at Benedum Civic Center

A Chefs Summer Day Camp held last summer at Benedum Civic Center delighted young culinary enthusiasts and likely left them hungry for more hands-on learning opportunities.

This summer, Bridgeport Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Harry Potter-themed Food and Fun Summer Camp. Once again, Brenda Smith will be heading up the program during which time day campers can concoct edible projects, such as Harry’s favorite treacle tarts, chocolate lava cake, butter beer and other creative treats.

There are two sessions: June 19-22 and July 17-20. Several have already registered for the sessions which run 10 a.m. through 1 p.m. on the designated days. Cost is $180 per child per session and Smith said she can accommodate 16 at each camp.

She said she has been dreaming up projects all winter long for the theme which she believes will be quite a draw with area children.

“I think Harry Potter is still pretty popular and from the outpouring of interest already, I think it will be a big hit,” she said.

Each session will feature the four houses of Hogwarts: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Children will enter Hogwarts Express and Platform 9 ¾ through some very clever transformations of Civic Center areas.

Students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry will encounter a close-to-authentic experience.

“We’ll have a transfiguration class where kids will transform ordinary objects into something else,” Smith said, “like a 16x20” white canvas into a beautiful painting.”

Each day will feature a “potions baking class.”

“While baked goods are in the oven, kids will go to the Ollivander Wand Shop and magically choose a witch or wizard and there will be things to do,” Smith said.
Sampling of baked goods will take place, of course, in the Great Hall. There will be crafts, wizardry and plenty of activities to fuel the imagination. Each session will end with a dress-as-your-favorite character day and an art exhibition showcasing projects.

The day camp is open to kids age 8 and up. Register at the Benedum Civic Center office or by calling 304-842-8240.

Smith said to like and follow the “Let’s Paint the Town” Facebook page for updates and information.
