After not playing at all during the first two weeks of the 2018 season and into the third week, Bridgeport finally got on the baseball diamond at the end of last week. The results were positive as the Indians rallied for an extra inning win last Thursday before coming back Friday to take a doubleheader sweep of Liberty.
So did the extra inning battle with the Huskies impact how the Tribe was viewed in the third week of the Class AA portion of the MetroNews 2018 baseball rankings?
It did. That win, as well as the two 10-run wins against the Mountaineers, impacted BHS in a positive way.
Bridgeport managed to remain in the No. 1 spot. However, this week the club is the unanimous choice at the top spot. Last week, Chapmanville had one of the first place votes, while this week has all 10 of the votes of the panel of statewide radio broadcasters and sportswriters.
Wayne is the new No. 2 (6-2), while Chapmanville (9-1) is now No. 3. Winfield (9-2) and Frankfort (5-1) come in at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Three Big 10 teams are in the top 10 as well. East Fairmont (7-1) is No. 7, Elkins (3-3) comes in at No. 9, while Fairmont Senior rounds out the top 10 at No. 10. Lincoln and Lewis County are in the “also receiving votes” portion of the standings.
Bridgeport is back in action today at Lewis County 4:30 p.m. The team returns home Tuesday (April 10) to face Philip Barbour, also at 4:30 p.m.
