Despite remaining unbeaten, Bridgeport dropped a spot in the Class AA portion of the second MetroNews Class AA boys’ basketball poll, but maintained the same spot in the state rankings regardless of class.
The 10-0 Indians are currently ranked No. 2 in Class AA after last week being the topped rank team. Westside, the team that eliminated BHS in the first round of last year’s state tournament, has taken over the top spot with a 10-1 mark.
Bridgeport still sits at the No. 6 position regardless of classification. Ironically, the No. 1 team in all classes is Class AAA Morgantown. The Mohigans stand at 10-1 and their lone setback was to Bridgeport in the title game of the EQT Tournament Dec. 31.
Unlike the AP poll, which utilizes human voters, the MetroNews Power Index is a computer based formula that factors in strength of schedule. The second edition includes games played through Tuesday (Jan. 20). BHS was ranked No. 2 in this week’s Associated Press poll, which is done by a panel of statewide sports writers.
Fairmont Senior, who BHS plays twice in February, is 12-0 and sits at No. 9 overall and No. 3 in Class AA, while Lincoln is 10-0 and sets at No. 15 overall and No., 5 in Class AA. The Tribe has two games with the Cougars as well. Mingo Central, who BHS beat early in the season is No. 20 overall.

While the boys are ranked No. 6, the young and suddenly surging BHS girls’ team, ranked No. 9 in this week’s AP poll, also found itself in the initial top 20 rankings. Paul Ayers’ Indians are 9-3 through Tuesday and were ranked No. 16 overall and stood as the No. 8 team in Class AA.
Several BHS foes are in the top 20. Class AA No. 2 Fairmont Senior – ranked No. 8 overall – has two wins over Bridgeport, while Lincoln – who BHS beat earlier this year – is ranked No. 9 overall and No. 3 in Class AA.
