BHS, Polar Bears Remain Status Quo in MetroNews Football Rankings to Set up Top 3 'AA' Battle Friday

As many anticipated, when Bridgeport battles Fairmont Senior Friday evening at Wayne Jamison Field, it will be a matchup of two of the state’s three top-ranked teams in Class AA. The latest edition of the MetroNews high school football has the two programs near the top of the standings.

The teams are where they have been since the preseason poll came out four weeks ago. And unlike the earlier weeks of the season, there is absolutely no change at the top of the poll – in terms of total points and votes received – as voters have the teams stationed in the same location.

The voters are radio broadcasters and sports writers from across the state. There are 30 members that vote in the poll.

BHS comes into the poll this week in the familiar No. 3 spot. The Indians have one of the 30 first place votes and a total of 248 points.

The Indians, 3-0, solidified their position with a 36-0 win Thursday at East-West Stadium. The Tribe took care of business against the now 0-3 Bees.

Fairmont Senior has one first place vote and 256 points for hold down second place. The Polar Bears position didn’t change after their 34-15 Friday victory against now 2-1 North Marion at East-West Stadium.

It was FSHS that ended Bridgeport’s three-year Class AA state title run last year. Fairmont won an incredibly played double overtime ‘AA’ semifinal contest at Jamison Field.

It’s likely there will be a change in the rankings next week after Friday’s game between BHS and Fairmont. The contest starts at 7 p.m.

Defending Class AA state champion Mingo Central is still the near unanimous choice at the state’s top team in Class AA. The Miners, 3-0, have 28 first place votes after getting a 65-22 win against Logan.

Point Pleasant remains in the No. 4 spot after its 54-7 win against Warren Local out of Ohio. Bluefield jumped up to No. 5 following a 45-13 win against Woodrow Wilson.

Keyser fell from No. 5 to No. 10 after taking a loss on the road to Fort Hill out of Maryland by a 59-0 score. Fort Hill is annually one of the top programs in the state of Maryland.

No other local teams are in the top 10. However, Robert C. Byrd and Liberty are in the “also receiving votes” portion of the poll.

In Class A, South Harrison remained at No. 3 after a bye week. The 2-0 Hawks will host Steubenville Catholic Friday in Lost Creek.
