While her high school basketball career has end, the honors for Bridgeport High School senior Emily Riggs has just begun. Riggs was recognized this week by the Big 10 Conference – and she was recognized in a big way.

The Fairmont State University signee was named the Big 10 “Player of the Year,” which is done by a vote of the league’s coaches.

Riggs was instrumental in leading Bridgeport back to the Class AA state tournament. The Indians ended up dropping a first round game to eventual state runner-up Wyoming East in the opening round.

Despite the setback and despite playing against one of the most difficult schedules, BHS finished the year at 17-9. Riggs was a large part of that as she led the team with nearly 20 points per game despite continually seeing defense specifically aimed at stopping her.

Riggs took the top player honor and North Marion Coach Mike Parrish took home the Coach of the Year award.

Bridgeport had two other players recognized. Senior Rory Marple was named to the first team, while sophomore Paige Humble was chosen to the second team.

On the first unit, North Marion’s Hannah Shriver and Fairmont Senior’s Anysa Jordan were named co-captains. The rest of the first team includes’ Lincoln’s Hannah Ferris and Victoria Sturm; North Marion’s Taylor Buonamici, Buckhannon-Upshur’s Audrey Gaudet and Alli Robinson; Lewis County’s Isabella Posey; and Fairmont Senior’s Abby Faulkner.

The second team included 11 selections. According to Big 10 officials, the reason for the high number is there was a seven-way tie on votes.

Members of the second team along with Humble include  Preston’s Michelle Thomas; East Fairmont’s Somer Stover and Kierra Bartholow, Lincoln’s Brynne Williams; Grafton’s Meredith Maier; North Marion’s Cara Minor; Elkins’ Sarah Riggleman; Lewis County’s Emma Cayton; Fairmont Senior’s Marley Washenitz; and Robert C. Byrd’s Hayley Willey.

More postseason honors will be released in the days ahead. Most notable will be the Class AA All-State team, which is put together by the West Virginia State Sports Writers Association.
