Bridgeport swimming continues to be strong, and not just at the high school level.  Local 12-year-old swimmer, Marra Johnson has been hitting the waves this March with impressive results.

Two weekends ago, Marra Johnson competed in the Southeast Ohio//West Virginia YMCA League Swim Championship in Canton. Twenty-three teams from the two states competed at this event, with approximately 1500 swimmers and more than 90 girls in Jo0hnson's age bracket.

Marra came away with a second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.89, third places in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM, a fourth place in the 50 breaststroke, and fifth place in the 200 freestyle, receiving a best time in all events. Her relays placed second in the 200 yard medley and third in the 200 yard freestyle.

This past weekend, Marra competed in the West Virginia State Short Course meet in Huntington.  During the weekend she swam in a total of 20 races, two of which were relays.  Marra placed first in the 1650 freestyle (mile) with a time of 19:43.87, 100 butterfly with a time of 104.96, 200 butterfly at a 2.25.82, and 100 breaststroke at a 1:15.05.  Johnson  placed second in the 200 breaststroke, 200 freestyle, and 200 IM;  third in 50 breaststroke, and 400 IM; and fourth in the 200 backstroke, again receiving personal best times in all events but two and including a best time in the 50 freesytle as the relay lead off.  She was high point runner up for the 11-12 year old girls.

Marra is now headed to compete in the YMCA Zone championship in Bowling Green, Ohio this weekend for the last of three weeks of March Madness swimming championships.  This is a time standard qualifying meet with swimmers from the five states in our league's zone including West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Indiana. She will be competing in six events and two relays during the meet this weekend.

Marra is coached by her father, Rick Johnson, and does her strength and conditioning training with Wes Brown at Gorilla Strength and Fitness.
