West Virginia University senior guard Jevon Carter has been named the Academic All-America® of the Year for Division I men’s basketball, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A sport management major with a 3.51 GPA, Carter was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year for the second-straight season. He was a 2017-18 unanimous choice for the All-Big 12 First Team, and is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Carter has been named to the All-Big 12 Defensive Team all four years with the Mountaineers. Carter is a finalist for several national awards including the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award and the John R. Wooden Award. He was recently named the Arthur Ashe Jr. Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Carter becomes the second WVU men’s basketball player to earn Academic All-America® of the Year honors for men’s basketball. Johannes Herber won the prestigious award in 2006. Carter’s Academic All-America® honor marks the sixth time since 2004 WVU has had a student-athlete on the Academic All-America® team with the last being Alex Ruoff earning Academic All-America® First Team honors in 2009.

Joining Carter as first-team selections on the 2017-18 Academic All-America® Division I basketball team are Tyler Clement (Creighton), A.J. Jacobson (North Dakota State), Tyler Seibring (Elon) and Joe Sherburne (UMBC).

“I’m honored to receive the highest academic honor in college basketball,” Carter said. “I’ve always been a hard worker on and off the court, and it just shows that hard work pays off on the court and in the classroom.”
