Indians Maintain Standing in Latest MetroNews Poll in Class AA as Top Teams All Find Friday Victories

By Jeff Toquinto on October 08, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It wasn’t that Bridgeport’s win Friday over North Marion wasn’t impressive. Rather, it appears that those ranked in front of the Indians in the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings were just as impressive in maintaining their positions.

The Indians checked in at No. 5 in the poll for the second straight week. The rankings are based on votes from 19 radio broadcasters and sports writers across West Virginia.

While not moving up, the fact that Bridgeport didn’t move down is always a good sign. The Tribe is the highest ranked one loss team in the standings after the 49-16 win against the Huskies at home on Friday.

Fairmont Senior remained as the top team in the Class AA standings. And the Polar Bears didn’t do anything to hurt their position and, in fact, enhanced it.

FSHS upended top 10 Weir at East-West Stadium on Friday. Fairmont, 7-0, rolled past the Red Riders by a 43-13 score and earned 15 of the 19 first place votes that were cast this week.

The defending ‘AA’ champions from Bluefield remain ranked second. The 6-0 Beavers rolled PikeView by a 41-7 score.

Poca and Point Pleasant remained at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively. The Dots beat Winfield 33-14, while PPHS had its second straight bye week.

Future Bridgeport foe Keyser remained in the top 10 at No. 7. The Golden Tornado came up with a 50-8 win against Man.

Robert C. Byrd is also in the top 10. The Eagles jumped up one spot from No. 10 to No. 9 following a homecoming win against Elkins by a 21-0 score.

Bridgeport will battle Elkins Friday. The game will be senior night and the final home game of the 2018 regular season.

No local teams in ‘AA’ were mentioned in the “others receiving votes” portion of the poll.

Doddridge County remained at No. 3 in Class A. The Bulldogs hammered Gilmer County 57-7.
