Thanks to a loss by previously second-ranked Bluefield, Bridgeport’s football team now finds itself ranked No. 4 in the most recent Class AA WVSSAC football standings. The poll was released today at 2 p.m.
The 7-1 Indians are the highest ranked ‘AA’ team in the state with one loss. And they can do plenty to enhance their position with a win on Friday.
Bridgeport will be on the road to face 6-1 and No. 7 Keyser. A win there, as well as a win in the final week of the regular season against Lincoln, would go a long way toward giving Bridgeport home games in at least the first two rounds of the playoffs.
However, getting a win against the Golden Tornado won’t come easy. Keyser has won five straight after suffering a 20-14 setback to Robert C. Byrd in the second week of the season.
At the top of the standings is Fairmont Senior at 8-0 and one of four unbeaten teams remaining. Poca, 7-0, and Nicholas County, 8-0, come in at No. 2 and No. 3 this week, respectively. The Beavers, now 6-1, are ranked No. 5 and have a 10.71 rating to Bridgeport’s 10.75 – meaning the Indians have to keep winning to have a shot at getting as many games at home as possible.
Point Pleasant, at 6-0, and the only other remaining unbeaten in ‘AA’ comes in at No. 6. Robert C. Byrd (5-2) is No. 8 and the highest ranked team with two losses in the state. Grafton, 5-1, is No. 9. Lewis County, at 5-3, is just outside the 16-team playoff field at No. 17.
In Class A, Doddridge County is ranked No. 5. The Bulldogs are currently 7-0.
