On Wednesday evening at Bridgeport Middle School gymnasium, a long-time coach at the school was recognized for decades of service. After the Braves varsity girls’ game and before the start of the varsity boys’ game, former boys coach Bill Shaver was honored by the school.

Shaver was presented with a plaque during the break between the two games. Along with having the opportunity to speak to the crowd, he was also joined in comments by from BMS Athletic Director Art Petitto and his former assistant Vernon Louk.

Several former assistant coaches were on hand for the ceremony. Several former players also showed up.

Shaver coached for 24 seasons at Bridgeport Middle School. Incredibly, his teams won 12 championships and were the runners-up nine times. The group finished first or second in the regular season in all 24 years. He finished with an overall record of 370-60.

While no longer a coach, he still is a teacher. Shaver, who has taught all over the place, is currently in his fourth year of teaching at BMS.
