MetroNews Releases Final 2018 Baseball Power Poll and Indians End Where They Started - at the Top

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on June 07, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It probably doesn’t come as no surprise, but the Class AA state champion Bridgeport Indians have finished the year as the top ‘AA’ team in West Virginia. While it may seem automatic, the MetroNews Baseball Power Rankings poll still requires a vote of 10 radio broadcasters and sports writers across the state.

The Indians earned all 10 of the votes after toppling Wayne by a 17-15 score to win their fifth-straight state championship. No team in state history, in any classification, has won five-straight state titles.

Bridgeport finished the year at 30-10. The Indians were ranked No. 1 from the preseason to the postseason in the MetroNews rankings.

The Pioneers and their runner-up finish earned them a No. 3 position. James Monroe, at No. 3, and Frankfort, at No. 4, were semifinalists I the state tournament. Winfield rounded out the top five.

The two foes Bridgeport had to beat to get to Charleston finished in the top 10 as well – and both are members of the Big 10 Conference. Lewis County (20-9) came in at No. 8, while Elkins (15-11) finished the year at the No. 10 team in the standings.

Two other local squads were in the “also receiving votes” portion of the standings. Fairmont Senior and East Fairmont, also Big 10 members, were listed there.

In Class A, Notre Dame also finished in the top 10. The Fighting Irish (18-15) finished the season ranked No. 7.
