Two Familiar Names, including former Educator, Earn Prizes in Carder Motors Playoff Payoff Week Three

Despite a full slate of games and despite the elimination of two of them, this week’s Carder Motors Playoff Payoff football pick’em competition had one of the highest – if not the highest – number of first place finishers ever. A total of nine individuals finished deadlocked for first place.

As is always the case with ties, a member of the Bridgeport Parks and Recreation staff makes the call with a blind draw on the names. The two who proved to be lucky and good this week are both Bridgeport residents.

Bill Montgomery and Louis Aragona both finished with sparkling 29-3 marks on the week. Thanks to the luck of the draw, Montgomery gets his choice a $25 gift certificate from Buffalo Wild Wings or a small cheesecake from Almost Heaven Desserts.

Montgomery, a former Bridgeport and Harrison County educator, will need to contact Hannah Edwards by email at hannah@connect-bridgeport.com with his choice and contact information. Aragona will also need to contact Edwards with his contact information so he can receive the prize not taken by Montgomery.

Along with those two, seven others were solid this week. The group of Don Cumming, Matt Ash, Frank Blake, Chris Byrd, Adam Holbert, Frank Cherubino and Bill Tichenor all went 29-3 for the first place tie. And they weren’t the only group strong this week.

Seventeen individuals were tied for 10th place to round out the top 25. The group of James Burton II, Craig Kelley, Sue Teter, Dan Glover, Michael Andrew, Duke Ware, Mike Ridgway, Nancy Wickenhofer, Eric Carpenter, Mike Alastanos, Dwight Bullough, Amber Gaines, Steven Hastings, Jason Dodd, Kevin Carbacio, David Gillot and Lenora Montgomery (Bill’s daughter-in-law) all finished 28-4.

There were 34 games originally listed. The Steelers game at Cleveland was eliminated due to it ending in a tie, while the Grafton-Petersburg contest was not played due to a lack of officials to play the contest. Regardless of how the WVSSAC rules on that contest, it will not count in this contest.

In the overall standings, there is a two-way tie for first place. Frank Blake and Michael Andrew both stand at 64-12. Louis Aragona is by himself in the third spot at 63-13. Four individuals are tied for fourth as David Gillot, Lenora Montgomery, Dan Glover, and Jeff Muller are all 62-14.

Six in the field are tied at the eighth spot. Chris Byrd, Curt Burner, Mike Alastanos, Frank Cherubino, Ashley McCall, and Bill Tichenor come in at 61-15. Ten individuals are even at No. 14 with Adam Starkey, Zachary Kesling, James Burton, Jason Dodd, Delbert Leatherman, Valerie Toquinto, Nancy Wickenhofer, Vernon Louk, Richard Houck, and Dan McNamee coming in at 60-16.

Ten more individuals at No. 24 to round out the overall top 25 after three weeks. The group consists of Duke Ware, Adam Holbert, Jay Garrett, Carol Hilton, Dustin Vincent, Mark Trippett, Kevin Carbacio, Clayce Spurlock, James Burton II, and David Marshall. Those individuals have 59-17 marks.

The prize packages are still being put together for the year. However, one of the top prizes include a $500 gift certificate from the Meadowbrook Mall. The top three pickers will be awarded prizes at the end of the contest, which goes well into December. The overall winner has their choice of the three prizes, while the second place winner will have their choice then of the final two remaining prizes.

So if you missed the first week of picks does that mean you can’t win in the overall prize selection? It would be difficult at this point, but not impossible. Here’s the good news.

What makes the Carder Motors Playoff Payoff competition unique is that once the contest is over you don’t necessarily know who the winner is even though you will see your weekly overall ranking and Connect-Bridgeport will post the weekly and overall top 25 throughout the contest. At the end of the year, everyone that competes has their two worst weeks dropped and then the winner is announced based on the highest winning percentage.

That means you can register now and two of the first three week will be eliminated in the final totals. Even after that, you can still enter and win weekly prizes.

If you are a registered member of Connect-Bridgeport's Web site, all you have to do is make sure you're signed in and the click the Playoff Payoff icon on the home page that can be found by scrolling down to the left. If you're not registered, go to the top of the home page and register. It takes less than a minute.

Another unique aspect of the competition is that you can make changes to your picks leading up to games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Individuals can make their picks for Friday’s games and can change them until 6 p.m. Friday. Games that are listed on Saturday and Sunday can be entered and changed as many times as necessary until 11 a.m. each day of the picks.

Unfortunately, there are occasional schedule changes - usually on the prep football side - that staff does not catch; usually games moved to Thursday or a time change bumped up. There are also occasional mistakes with the proper teams playing each other. As has been the case in the past, each person will either be given a win for those games when there are schedule changes we miss or a mistake on our end or a or they will simply not be counted for the weekly and final standings.

You must use your actual name to compete. Nicknames or aliases will not be recognized for weekly or overall prizes.
