Indians' Baseball Team Goes Wire to Wire as State's No. 1 Team in Class AA MetroNews Power Rankings

By Jeff Toquinto on June 06, 2016

They finished the year with 30 wins. And they also finished the year with their 30 straight Class AA state championship.

Today, they finished with something else that comes as no surprise. The Bridgeport Indian baseball team finished the year ranked No. 1 in the final MetroNews Class AA baseball power rankings.

Here’s what makes the Indians final ranking impressive – they were No. 1 starting with the preseason poll and never left the top spot. Although the Tribe did see their unanimous status change on more than one occasion, they were always listed No. 1. As expected after their title win Saturday, Bridgeport finished as the unanimous top-ranked team in the ‘AA’ standings.

BHS captured the crown with a 9-4 victory against PikeView Saturday. The win left Bridgeport with its third-straight 30-win season. BHS finished the year at 30-6.

Along with two impressive wins in the state tournament, Bridgeport’s regular season also included a multitude of impressive victories. The Indians got an 8-0 win against Class AAA runner-up Nitro, split a doubleheader with Cabell Midland, and dropped a 2-1 decision to ‘AAA’ state champion Jefferson at JHS.

The Tribe became the first team in state Class AA history to win three straight titles. Whether the Indians can make it four in a row is unknown. The Indians lost nine seniors from this year’s squad, but veteran Coach Robert Shields’ teams generally lose a large senior class. Next year, Shields will start his 31st season with the school.

Grafton was the only other local team in the ‘AA’ rankings by finishing at No. 10 with a 15-13 mark. South Harrison ended the year with a 20-6 mark and a No. 6 ranking in Class A.
