From the Bench: For First Time in Many Years, Tribe Football Program to Again have Own Web Site

By Jeff Toquinto on April 23, 2017 from Sports Blog via Connect-Bridgeport.com

It’s back. Or rather it will soon be back and it will be a bit different and with a bit different name.

Starting for the 2017 Bridgeport High School football season, the program will once again have a Web site to promote the program and provide information. The voice of the Indians, Travis Jones, will be handling the bulk of the operation of the Web site.

As many that closely follow the program know, this won’t be the first Web site. For several years, the team had its own location on the Web and had plenty of followers. However, Jones said maybe as many as 10 years ago it became too heavy of a task as other items began needing attention.

“That was the reason we let it go. It was simply a ton of work. When we had the Web site the first time we were actually writing code for it,” said Jones. “In the last 10 years or so, technology has changed to the point where maintaining a Web site is a lot easier than it used to be because there are templates to follow and a single person can handle most of it.”

Jones began exploring the idea again, he said, after being approached by Coach Josh Nicewarner to revive it. Jones and Nicewarner saw many quality football Web sites statewide and beyond and wanted to have the same.

“This isn’t groundbreaking, but it’s something we want to have up soon,” said Jones.

Jones is correct, several football teams have their own sites. Several other athletic programs also have their own sites, including a very good site hosted by Bridgeport Track & Field and Cross Country.

Soon, however, BHS will have another one. It will be under the domain BridgeportIndiansFootball.com.

“It will definitely be up by August,” said Jones. “To be honest, I don’t know the exact time frame because I need to review all of the items involved with running this. I actually have a training session planned. It’s like any other on-line endeavor where you’re putting out information. The question will be how quickly can items be gathered for the site?”

Jones said the site will feature player bios that could be gathered initially in June with the instructional period begins. He also said coach’s bios and plenty of historical data will be included. During the season, weekly game reports that are compiled by Jones’ color analyst and former BHS player Ryan Nicewarner will be included. The site will also feature news, features and game stories that are foot related from Connect-Bridgeport that will allow individuals to click through to get that information.

“Josh wanted this to be an extension of the App we have and an information point for people to get rosters and stats and be able to showcase the program both past and present,” said Jones.

The site, he said, will also be a place where he hopes media members can go to for up-to-date information. He also said it could help with postseason honors.

“A lot of media members vote on player awards and there will be information readily available there,” Jones said. “For those that don’t want to listen to the game on their app, they can listen from their laptop on the Web site. We’ll have that and many other features as we go along including radio highlight packages from our games.

“We’re just now scratching the surface of what we’ll have week to week,” he continued. “We’ll see what is garnering the most traffic and focus on that and also look to gather items that may be difficult such as lists of all-state players and players that went on to play college.”

While the site will have ties to the radio coverage the existing football App, Jones said the Web site is more a reflection on the efforts of the Friends of Bridgeport Football (tasked with promoting and raising funds for the program). Because of that, the site will also feature information on Nicewarner’s camps, the annual steak fry and golf tournament and other venture.

“We want this to be the best of the best,” said Jones. “We want it to be reflective of the history and tradition of this program.”
