From the Bench: Year After Knee Injury Appeared to End Career, Miki Glenn Signs Pro Hoops Contract

By Jeff Toquinto on August 12, 2018 from Sports Blog via Connect-Bridgeport.com

One of the last times I wrote about Bridgeport High School alumna Miki Glenn was back in March of 2017. The former state basketball player of the year for the Indians had, unfortunately, watched her college career come to an end in the postseason as she tore the ACL and MCL in her left.

Glenn, already the owner of a Division II championship will playing for California (Pa.) at the Division II level never got a chance to add another one. Her season, her hopes for another title ended that day.

Something else almost ended as well. Prior to the injury, Glenn was hoping that she could play professionally – overseas she felt was a good option. For a while, much like her knee, those dreams of continuing to play the game she loved with a passion few in this area have ever witnessed were shattered.

“Honestly I was very devastated about not getting a chance to see if I could play professionally so life made me take a quick pivot,” said Glenn.

The pivot took her to the workforce. She worked at Mylan for about five months and, as many might expect that knew Glenn, the basketball bug was still firmly in her system.

“I just missed basketball way too much. I went and worked at (former Morgantown High all-stater and Division I guard) Nate Smith’s basketball clinics,” said Glenn. “I wanted to stay in the game.”

As it turns out, she’s going to stay in the game. And she’s going to live out her dream.

On August 3, BHS alumna Miki Glenn became the second when she inked to play with the Brisbane Capitals of the Queensland (Australia) Basketball Association (QBA). Glenn joins current Colorado Rockies pitcher Harrison Musgrave as graduates getting paid to compete at the next level.

“The injury ended up just delaying everything,” said Glenn, a 2013 BHS graduate and a 2017 Graduate from California with a degree in chemistry. “If you want something, sometimes you have to wait a little longer than you would want to.”

In short order, she went from devastated to Down Under. And an old local basketball name helped get things started.

“(Current Notre Dame High Coach) Jarrod West texted me and about he knew who wanted me as a client for his sports agency and I was able to provide film and stats from college,” said Glenn. “From there, the agency took care of the rest and they ended up giving a couple of few contract options.”

Most of the options from the IHN Management Group were in Australia. The other was in Sweden. Glenn settled on the team in Brisbane.

“I don’t know much about it, but my father has really done a lot of research; more than I have,” said Glenn. “I’ll be competing in a league with about 20 teams and the league starts in September and it runs through March.”

That, of course, led me to wonder if her knew was strong enough to handle the grind after being away. And I asked Glenn that very question.

“My knee feels very strong. It feels good when I get out on the floor and through all the workouts and extra time there haven’t been any significant issues,” said Glenn. “With my knee in line and the opportunity there, I decided to do it.

Glenn has faith it will work out. If not, she already knows that she’d live the rest of her life in regret if she didn’t sign the contract to compete.

“That was part of the thought process. I talked to Nate and (former BHS) Coach (Dave) Marshall and my friends and they all told me I need to do this,” said Glenn. “I needed support from my support system and they all pointed me in the same direction. Now, I won’t have to wonder about not doing this years from now.”

Glenn’s departure time is measured in days, not months. She’ll be going to Australia with her wife Jessica Glenn. Having someone to go on the journey with her is making it much easier.

“She’s been such a huge support for me ever since we met in college. She’s told me she’ll go anywhere with me to chase this dream,” said Glenn. “Knowing I have her behind me has been huge in this process.”

Glenn said she’s certain she’ll make a trip or two home in the near future, but doesn’t know when. She also doesn’t know how long it will last. She does know how long she wants it to last.

“I would like to play until I can’t play anymore,” said the two-time first team All-American. “As long as I can make enough money to make a good living and we can live comfortably, I’ll go until I can’t go anymore.”

Glenn, whose personal work ethic and discipline molded perfectly into Marshall’s old school system at BHS, said she was thrilled to be able to tell him the news.

“He was the second person I called and he was in the Bahamas so we had to get together on the phone later during his trip. Ever since I met him in the fourth grade I wanted him to be proud of me and to be able to have him say that and to tell him the news was amazing,” said Glenn. “He was so excited and he told me he was bragging about me to everyone on the boat while he was out of the country.”

There’s a chance she may want to get used to that. For those that know Glenn, there’s a good chance there’s going to be more bragging by those that get to know her out of the country. This time it won’t be in the Bahamas. This time it will be in Australia.

Here’s hoping for continued success for Miki. If hard work has anything to do with it, it’s already guaranteed.
