The Grapevine: Considerate Voting, a Beautiful Fall, and Thanksgiving Preparations

By Rosalyn Queen on October 27, 2016 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

If there is nothing else that we know, we know that we are in the middle of an election and it will soon be over.

I know that most of you, as I am, are getting tired of hearing all of the political mumbo/gumbo, but it really is important that we listen and that we vote.  Please give careful consideration to who you vote for and take the opportunity to meet as many of the local candidates as you can.

There is a lot of printed information about the candidates that will introduce you to them and you might also want to listen to The Mike Queen Radio Show that comes on every week day at 9 am on 103.3 WAJR-FM. Not because he's my son, but David and I listen regularly. Most of the candidates call in and they talk about all kinds of political issues important to our families, our communities and our state. Mike also gives his listeners  the opportunity to call in and ask any questions that you might have.

Early voting is now starting so you will have the opportunity to vote at your convenience. I urge you to exercise your right to vote and to do so in this very important election.

I want to wish Jay Spatafore a very Happy Birthday and many more in good health.

Most people seem to have mushrooms coming out the cazoo.  They have been very plentiful this year and most hunters have been willing to share.  I am about at the end  of my canning and will have a nicesupply for our family to enjoy this winter. It takes a lot of patience and work to get them cleaned, but as far as I am concerned they are worth it. Remember that most of the mushroom recipes can be found in my book, Arrivederci, Recipes and Customs Every Italian Girl Takes From Home. You can purchase a copy at James and Law and at Tomaro's Bakery in Glen Elk.

A wonderful gift would be a copy of the book with a jar of your canned mushrooms. I just do not know anybody who likes mushrooms who would not be elated to receive this and then too, all the Christmas recipes are in the book.

For some reason I think that this has been one of the most beautiful fall seasons for a long time.  The weather has been beautiful.  I hope that most of you were able to get out and see the changing of the leaves.  The rain and wind has just about ended this beautiful spectacular event, but here is still some time to enjoy it.

Do  not forget to change your time.  Be sure to set your clocks back one hour.

As we start into the month of November our thoughts turn to preparing for Thanksgiving.  Many local organizations will be filling baskets for those less fortunate neighbors. Be sure to share with these groups so that they may fill these baskets to the brim..If your group is looking for a project, why not collect canned foods for the Food Pantry at the Progressive Women's Association.  It is conveniently located in the Uptown Event Center on Washington Avenue. All donations are greatly appreciated.

As I scanned through my collection of cook books, I decided that for me, the best Thanksgiving is the traditional one. I am looking forward to turkey, with dressing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy and green beans, a lettuce salad and desert topped off with pumpkin pie.  I guess it is ok to try different variations of this menu, but as for me, I just enjoy the traditional  menu. Be sure to remember those who might be alone and invite them to share dinner with you and your family or at least send them a meal prepared from your table.

My condolences to the Carder family on the passing of Jack.  For many years he was such a good friend to Dave and I.  We so enjoyed visiting with him and Roma.  Dave and Jack were old Anmoore buddies and Roma and I loved talking about our Italian heritage and of course, our children and grandchildren.  I know that he is in peace and enjoying being with the love of his life, Roma.

Enjoy the season for it will not be long until the snow will be here.  Keep in touch and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine."
