The Grapevine: Continuing to Celebrate Some Important Women

By Rosalyn Queen on May 17, 2018 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

I had an especially nice Mothers Day. I went to dinner with all my children and to me that is what it is all about. As usual the food at the Bridgeport Conference Center was delicious.  My hat is off to Scott and his staff for another great job.

A reminder that the Women of Distinction Luncheon on June 1st is being sponsored by the PWA. Ten wonderful women will be honored and our keynote speaker will be the president of Fairmont State University. For info or reservations call (304) 624-6881.

This past week I participated in an event that was a little sorrowful for me but was really enjoyed by all in attendance. About 25 graduates of the class of Roosevelt-Wilson High School class of 1957 gathered to say goodbye to Garnet Gillespie Garrett. Garnet has lived in our area for over 70 years but now she is moving to North Carolina to live with her daughter. She has mixed emotions but she thinks this will be best for her in the event she needs care as she gets older. Basically she is in good health now.

Garnet is one of my longest friends that I have had since the first grade. I think we must have met in the first grade when we entered East View Grade school and our teacher was Helen Stealey. We continued through the sixth grade when our teacher was Principal Teter. We both were in the toy orchestra and always had parts in the seasonal plays. Garnet lived with her mom and dad and sisters and brothers in a little cottage in Park View with a little stream that run in front of it where we waded frequently in the summer. They then moved down in the middle of East View.

After sixth grade we entered Broadway Junior High. At that time the grades where split and we were both in the A class. We were both very active with the marching and tumbling teams under the direction of Mr. Kishbaugh. Mrs Chenowith had an operetta every other year and we had big parts in the seventh and ninth grades. Our home room teacher was Miss Riley and our principal was Mr. Williams.

After completing school at Broadway we went on to RW for high school. Although our ways went seperate we continued our friendship. We were at each other's house frequently and she always attended my sleep overs.

Sam Moscar and Emory Lehosit were also in attendance at our lunch and they attended school with us from the first grade.
After we both married Garnet and I continued our friendship.  We both lived in the area and ran into each other often. When we spearheaded our monthly 1957 diner meetings Garnet was the glue that held us together and kept us updated on the other members of our class.

We will all miss her and her monthly calls and cards for birthdays, etc.

I wish my friend a safe journey and continued good health as she starts off on this new phase. Take care and keep in touch my dear friend. Know that you have been appreciated and will be missed. Come back soon for a visit.

Take care and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine".
