The Grapevine: Election Day, Veterans Day, and the PWA Christmas Luncheon

By Rosalyn Queen on November 03, 2016 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

On November 11, most individuals who work will have a day off and I do not know if many of you know the reason for this one-day vacation.  It is to observe Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is a public holiday to honor all military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces.  It commemorates the end of World War I which officially ended on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. I urge each of you to commemorate this holiday in some way.

There will be a lot of parades that you can attend or you might want to make a visit to the Veteran's hospital or the Veteran's home which is located here in Clarksburg.  I hope you realize what a sacrifice these individuals made for our freedom and what a sacrifice their families made. We owe a lot to these individuals for the freedom we all enjoy.

A special birthday wishes to Nancy Bartlett.  May she have many more in good health.   So sorry we missed the party. Next year.

Election Day is here.  Soon all the campaign signs will be down.  There will be no more debates.  The ads will disappear from the newspapers.  There will be no more spaghetti dinners to attend and we will be left with those few who have been elected.  Our support should not end now.

These individuals will need us even more after the election.  Our support will have to continue and we will have to keep the officials’ feet to the ground to at least try to accomplish what they have promised during their campaign. Please be certain that you get out and vote.  If not, you are being disrespectful of the right that we have to continue to support a free country and the sacrifice made by all of those that we honor on Veterans Day.
Most of us know that Thanksgiving is just around the corner and then Christmas will be here. I want to offer a suggestion that might enable you to secure a gift or two.  Attend the PWA Vera Bradley Bingo that will be held next Sunday. It will be at the VFW Hall and the tickets are $20.00.  Each purse will be filled with great gifts so if you win you will get a purse to give as a gift and all the goodies to keep for yourself. We have been praised for the great gifts we fill the purses with. The Grand Prize will be a money tree with hundreds of dollars’ worth of gift certificates to local eateries.  Elinda's famous hot dogs will be for sale and you can enjoy lunch with us.   Call 304 624 6881 to get tickets or for more information.

Look for more information on the Christmas Luncheon for PWA members and sponsors to be held in December at the Uptown Event Center.  We are planning a special party for our members both current and new. I hope you will attend many of the holiday observances that are being planned by different groups.  Many organizations do a lot to provide us with special programs.  Check on the special concert to be presented by the Culture Foundation.  It will certainly be a great program to put us in the Holiday spirit.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is now over but that does not mean that you should not still get your mammogram.  Remember the big "M" and take care of your elf and those other women you love.

Do not forget to vote, keep in touch and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through the Grapevine."
