The Grapevine: Observing the Anniversary of 9/11 and the Hurricanes in Texas and Florida

By Rosalyn Queen on September 19, 2017 from The Grapevine via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Americans observe all kinds of events and this week we observed the anniversary of the 9/11 attack on New York City. To me this,is a very sad observance.

I remember, as though it were yesterday, exactly where I was and what I was doing when those planes struck the World Trade Center. When I reflect on this event, I know that we have learned great lessons from this event.  And I know that our country, our military and our leaders are doing all that they can to prevent an attack like that from happening again.

Another sad thing happened to us this past week and that was the two hurricanes in Texas and Florida. How sad it was to watch all the devastation and not be able to help. It breaks my heart to think of all those misplaced families and all they have lost.

So many homes were lost.  And those homes were full of momentos that can never been replaced.  I pray that those families affected by these floods will hold on to the memories of better times and loved ones.  And I encourage all of you to help in any way you can to assist all of the areas affected. A donation to the Red Cross is always a great idea.

As we get nearer to the date, I wanted to take the oportunity to explain to you about the Progressive Women's Association  program we call "Women of Distinction".  We initiated the program two years ago and it has grown to become a very successful program.

First, we celebrated Black Culture Month in February by honoring ten African American Women who live in, born in or worked in Harrison County. In June we observe, our American observances and honor ten women in Harrison County.  Then in October we observe Italian Culture Month by honoring ten Italian American Women in Harrison County.

Our observances are held at the Uptown Event Center with a luncheon and a keynote speaker. We present the honorees with a plaque and the opportunity to make a few remarks. The PWA believes that the contributions that each of these women make has had a great impact on our community.

Three months before each luncheon takes place, nominations are accepted and then voted on by the PWA Board of Directors.

The Italian American observance will be held on October 27 at 12 p.m. at the Uptown Event Center. For more information or to make a reservation to attend this luncheon, please call (304) 624-6881. Davis Funeral Home is our gracious sponsor of this event.

Keep in touch and until next week "Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine".
