The Locavore Next Door: Roberto's Restaurant

By Carrie Robinson on June 15, 2012 from The Locavore Next Door via Connect-Bridgeport.com

After sitting down at one of Roberto’s six red and white checkered table clothed tables, the first thing that caught my eye was the discs of homemade pizza dough being tossed into the air in front of me.  I have a special appreciation for restaurants that don an open kitchen.  To me, that means that they have nothing to hide and take pride in the cleanliness and orderliness of their kitchens.  Owner Robert Haislip was more than happy to demonstrate his hand tossing skills for the camera.

My husband and I started our meal at Roberto’s by ordering their cheese bread.  If you need an extremely affordable appetizer to feed a large family, then the cheese bread is for you.  We were pleasantly surprised when our 16 inch cheese bread was delivered to our table.  It was definitely not what we were expecting. The cheese bread is covered with a generous amount of basil and cheese and comes with a meat sauce for dipping.

After seeing the hand tossed pizza dough, it was a no brainer that we would be ordering a pizza to share.  My husband is a pizza traditionalist- just cheese and pepperoni on his half.  I went with pepperoni and a smattering of Oliverio’s sweet peppers on my half.  Yes, you read that correctly- Oliverio’s peppers in Sweet, Hot, or Mixed are a topping offered at Roberto’s.  The pizza crust is slightly reminiscent of the thick style crust you used to get at Alvaro’s.  (Those of you who have been around in this city for a while will know exactly what I am talking about.)

Had it not been for that enormous order of cheese bread, we may have had room for Roberto’s homemade tiramisu.  Next time we will skip the appetizer for a piece of it.  Bonus?  Roberto’s serves all of their desserts with a scoop of vanilla gelato.

There is limited seating inside of Roberto’s, so it may be a good idea to order your pizza to go.  Just call 304-933-3105.  Roberto’s also offers some other Italian favorites on their menu- steak hoagies, spaghetti and meatballs, and antipasto salad.

Roberto’s is located in the Johnson Avenue shopping plaza across from the Sheetz.
