Bridgeport Community Yard Sale Turns out Record Numbers; Traffic Issues to Again be Reviewed by City

The City of Bridgeport’s annual community-wide yard sale proved to be a big success over the weekend, according to City Clerk Andrea Kerr. In fact, Kerr said the turnout of those participating was the most ever.

“By the time it was done, on the registered list that we had on the map on the City Web site (that could be printed out), we ended up with well over 100 participants,” said Kerr. “We also know that there are usually a good bit that don’t register so we had, as a guess, probably 125 or more homes participate in the event.”

Because of the numbers and the interest, Kerr said the city will have another event in 2018. As of now, a date hasn’t been finalized. Kerr said she hopes that will be determined in the months ahead as it’s one of the things she gets calls on regularly throughout the year.

Surprisingly, one thing she didn’t get this morning – by phone call, email or other forms of messaging – were complaints from residents regarding traffic flow. However, Kerr said she was aware from social media that there were several areas in the city where traffic got to be a problem.
“We’re aware of it, but to this point my office hasn’t had an official complaint called into the office, but we do know there were some issues. The things I’ve heard or read involved areas where it was difficult to navigate due to the traffic flow and people parking on both sides of the street,” said Kerr.

Kerr said Bridgeport had police out patrolling the streets to help alleviate some of the parking issues. She added that the sheer volume of visitors may have made getting to every street difficult.

“We met last year after the yard sale and talked about this issue and we again addressed it in length prior to this year,” said Kerr. “We’ll likely make some minor adjustments to hopefully make the event less problematic on the residents.”

Kerr said issues such as blocking driveways and parking on both sides of a roadway where it is not allowed is illegal. For this event in the future, or for any time it happens, Kerr said she advises individuals to call 911.
