First Weather System Bringing Accumulating Snow to Hit Area Today; Wind, Travel Could be Problematic

A weather system that is expected to bring snow across large parts of West Virginia is on the way to Bridgeport, Harrison County and North Central West Virginia. But, the worst of the system appears to be set to hit the higher elevations east of Interstate 79.

“In Harrison County, you’re looking anywhere from a dusting all of the way up to three inches. The three inch forecast, I believe, is generous as I’m still thinking we’ll see about one inch in this area,” said WDTV Weather Anchor Colleen Campbell. “It should start up in the next hour or so and then pick up a bit as the day progresses.”

What that means is snow should begin coming down before noon. The bulk of the accumulation that comes will be later today. If you're west of Interstate 79 chances for a dusting of up to one inch are greater.

“It will start sticking in the afternoon and early evening,” said Campbell. “Areas that may see the most are places such as Tucker County, which could see up to four inches of accumulation.”

Snow isn’t the only issue with the system. Wind gusts that began last night and have continued this morning will continue throughout today and into Thursday.

“The gusts today will be as high as 45 miles per hour,” said Campbell. “Winds will start to diminish in the overnight hours, but by Thursday morning it will still be breezy, with gusts at times up to 15 miles per hour.”

The win will also impact the temperature. Lows could reach 19 degrees this evening.

“When you factor in the winds, it’s going to feel like the teens this afternoon and single digit temperatures tonight,” said Campbell. “The warmest air was already in the area this morning.”

That, said Campbell, could create some issues.

“There will be some potential driving conditions that aren’t desirable, particularly in the period where many will be coming home work,” said Campbell. “Those out on the roads need to exercise caution.”

The system will continue into Thursday. The accumulations, however, should be over by early Thursday.
