Traffic Pattern and Road Closure Information Set for Light Up Night and Saturday's Christmas Parade

EDITOR'S NOTE: Check back Thursday morning for a complete list of all the Light Up Night participants, most of which will have treats and trinkets at no cost to visitors.

All systems are a go for Thursday’s 14th Annual City of Bridgeport Light Up Night and Christmas Parade to be held once again on Bridgeport Main Street Corridor.

Although the official tree lighting will begin around 7 p.m. Thursday, activities will begin prior to that with musical performances. Heritage, Johnson and Simpson Elementary School choirs will all be performing Thursday as well as the Bridgeport High School Jazz Band.

The Christmas Parade will take place on Saturday. Dozens of entrants are again expected and perhaps more than a thousand spectators will be on hand.

Before any of that can happen, however, Main Street needs to be shut down and traffic needs to be diverted. Because of that, the city has released the following information regarding traffic for the big events downtown.

Light Up Night – The city will close Main Street from Virginia Ave to Third Street at 5:30 p.m. and it will remain closed until around 9 p.m. (event is over). The following streets will be effected: Orchard St. – will be Closed at Main Street (no traffic until Main Street reopens); Center Street – will be Closed at Philadelphia Ave and Main Street (no traffic until Main Street reopens); Davis Street/First Street/Second Street – will be closed at Main Street at 5:30 p.m. (traffic may go East on Main St from these streets while event is going on).

All vehicles that are in parking lots on Main Street (between Virginia Avenue and Third Street) will not be allowed to leave the lots after the city closes the road until it is reopened at the conclusion of the event.

Christmas Parade (Dec. 1) – The city will close Main Street from Virginia Avenue to Fifth Street on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. for the Christmas Parade. All side streets will be closed once the parade starts at 10 a.m. until the event is over (around 11:30 a.m.)

“These are among the most loved and most attended events each year in Bridgeport,” said Bridgeport Community Development Director Andrea Kerr. “We want to get the word out early regarding street closures so people can make alternative travel arrangements as needed. On Thursday night and Saturday morning the streets (listed above) will be closed for several hours and we wanted to provide a heads up to everyone so they can enjoy the festivities.”
