City Faces in Different Places

By Julie Perine on December 06, 2020 from City Faces via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Today's City Face is a very proud Bridgeport resident - me!
My family moved to Bridgeport (from Wheeling, where I was born and after living briefly in North View) when I was 7 years old.

My family: I married Jeff, my high school sweetheart, in 1980. In addition to being self-employed in the wholesale food business Hadorn Distributing, he is pastor of Ten Mile Baptist Church.

We have four grown children, two sons-in-law and five grandchildren: Deanna (Garrett, French teacher at BHS) and husband Gary (IT, Harrison County Schools) and their kids Vienna, Garrett and Indigo; Brittany (McQuaid, special education teacher at Lumberport Elementary) and husband Andrew (Country Roads Physical Therapy & Rehab) and their kids Della and Anderson; Jeffrey II (owner, operator of Della's Deli) and Jacob (Wildlife & Fisheries major at WVU).

My pets: We have a Siberian Husky named Shasta who travels Bridgeport with me on foot every day. We also have three cats: Rosebud, Jenkins and our three-legged wonder, Mojo.

Where do you work and what do you do there? I am Media and Marketing Rep for the Greater Bridgeport Convention & Visitors Bureau
and Connect-Bridgeport.com, writing about and promoting our great city.

I'm also part-owner of Della's Deil on Main Street, named after ... you guessed it ... my granddaughter Della! Jeffrey runs the show, working there (more than) full time and baking those yummy pepperoni rolls every day before the sun rises.

What are your hobbies/favorite past times? I love to bicycle, walk, spend time on the water boating, fishing and swimming, grow flowers, read, take photos and write! I’m happiest when I’m with my family, doing just anything together.

Favorite Bridgeport spot?  I love lots of Bridgeport spots, but I would have to say Hinkle and Deegan Lakes or anywhere I am walking or riding.

What do you like about Bridgeport … why is this a good place to live?  I love Bridgeport which is why it’s so easy for me to talk it up! I love the support, the friendliness and the avid efforts everyone makes to make this such a great city. I love the excitement of the athletic programs. I love that our city is such a great example of growth, but small enough that we can personally know the firemen, policemen, mayor and councilmen, teachers, medical professionals and all the other good folks of our city. I love having neighbors. I love that everywhere you go, you run into someone to talk with and
share a quick story. It’s the best city ever.

One – or more – of your favorite memories of something that took place in Bridgeport ... Oh my. There are so many, especially ones which have taken place over the past 30 years or so while raising our kids. Everywhere I go – be it one of the schools, churches or parks – a memory pops into my head. One of my earliest memories is sled riding with my sister Janet (Hathaway) and parents Bill and Shirley Hadorn on Christmas night. There was so much snow! We were sledding right down Third Street.

What is your favorite WV spot outside of Bridgeport? We love the mountains and have spent lots of time in Tucker and Pendleton counties. Lately, however, we have become smitten with the Fayetteville and Summersville area, where we have spent time at the water park, ziplined and gone horseback riding.

How about your favorite place outside of WV? Within the states, the Outer Banks. I also love Punta Cana, Mexico and Europe. My favorite European spots to date include Denmark, Austria and Geneva, Switzerland.

What are some of your favorite things?

Food/restaurant? Hands down, my favorite food is salmon. I love to make it on our own grill or order it at Oliverio’s. I love all the locally-owned restaurants and have my favorites at each.

Favorite color? I love aqua/blue, the hues of the sky and the ocean. I’m also partial to yellow. My wedding was yellow and so is our house!

Music genre/artist? I always have my radio tuned to KLove, listening to contemporary Christian music. It really stirs my soul and brightens my day. I also love some pop and country and oldies, especially Motown music.

What is your best childhood memory? I have lots of memories created at our home, but also of visiting my grandparents in Wheeling. My paternal grandma and grandpap lived right along National Road. I loved sleeping and listening to the traffic. My maternal grandparents lived on a farm in Elm Grove. I loved sleeping there too, listening to the crickets, frogs and other country sounds. I think of all that very often.

Interesting fact about you and/or something you would like to add… Both of our sons were born on the same day – Sept. 22 – 11 years apart, when the oldest, Jeffrey, was 11. My husband’s birthday is 11 days before that – on Sept. 11.

Our family loves any reason to celebrate and spend time together. We even party on Groundhog Day, which has become an official Hadorn/Perine/Hathaway holiday.

I am a born-again Christian, saved by grace and eternally thankful for my salvation and God's guidance in my life.
