For nearly three decades, Johnson Elementary School has hosted Career Day to enlighten fifth graders about potential career aspirations. Typically, members of the public are asked to come to the classrooms to talk about their professions, share visual aids and answer questions. 

 

Presenters have included doctors, nurses, dentists, policemen, firemen, lawyers, photographers, journalists, accountants, chefs, electricians, engineers, dog groomers and everything in between. 

 

"This has historically been very successful with excellent participation and a wide range of careers," said Julie Fulks, school counselor and Career Day coordinator. 

 

Due to the COVID pandemic, this year's event will look different. The in-person Career Day cannot take place, but an alternative is being planned that will provide useful information to students. 

 

Fulks and Johnson Elementary counselor Kyra Burnett are organizing a virtual career day through a Flipgrid platform which has been created. By clicking on the link below, presenters can record up to 10-minute videos which can later be viewed by all students of JES.

 

"We are hoping to get many videos for students to view and are asking the community to make videos for the students," Fulks said.

 

Videos must be submitted by Monday, February 22.

 

The upside of a virtual Career Day is that participants don't have to be at a certain place at a certain time. In fact, they don't even have to be in Bridgeport - or even the U.S.

"Videos may be made from anywhere in the world," Fulks said. "We are hoping for a wide variety for the students to learn!"
