Scam Warning Reminder: Bridgeport Police Advising Community of Recent Phone Financial Con Increase

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on February 25, 2026

FROM THE BRDGEPORT POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Bridgeport Police Department is warning residents about an increase in financial crimes occurring over the phone.

Scammers may pretend to be from law enforcement, government agencies, banks, utility companies, or other trusted organizations. Their goal is to pressure you into giving personal or financial information.

Protect Yourself:

Never give out personal information (Social Security numbers, bank account details, credit card numbers, passwords, etc.) over the phone.
Do NOT trust caller ID. Scammers can “spoof” phone numbers to make it look legitimate.

Ask for a call-back number and the caller’s name.

Hang up and verify independently by calling the official phone number listed on the organization’s website or on the back of your card.
Be cautious of urgency or threats. Scammers often pressure victims to act immediately.

Never send third-party payments (gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, payment apps, or prepaid cards) to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Be cautious of urgent demands or threats

Legitimate agencies will not demand payment through gift cards, crypto, or other third-party methods.

If you believe you have been targeted or victimized, contact the Bridgeport Police Department at 304-842-8260 or the Non-Emergency line at 304-626-4900.

Help protect yourself, family members, friends, and your neighbors by sharing this information.

Remember, just because they sound legitimate doesn't mean they are legitimate.
