Healthy Kids First: Should Kids Eat All of Their Fruits & Vegetables for the Day in One Setting?

By Mandy Curry on July 13, 2013 from Healthy Kids First

When it comes to healthy starts to your child’s day, smoothies are top of mind.  They’re a great way to get the kids involved in the healthy eating journey.  Most kids have experimented with fruit smoothies, but throwing in vegetables is where the real excitement happens.

Carrot, Spinach, and Kale are all great vegetables to use in your smoothie that pack the nutrients, but still maintain amazing taste.

Kids should actually eat five servings of fruits and vegetables each day and smoothies make it possible to load all five servings in one morning blend. But is this best for our children?  Is it ok to serve them 5 servings of fruits and vegetables in a smoothie and then forgo their fruit and vegetable consumption for the rest of the day?

Check out this video where I asked Registered Dietitian, Sarah Sturgill, that very question.

And if you’re looking for a great smoothie to try with your kids, give this one a blend.  It’s an amazing jump-start to the day.  Enjoy!

1 cup almond milk
½ cup raw kale or spinach
½ cup raw carrots
½ cup frozen strawberries
½ cup frozen strawberries
1 banana
3-4 ice cubes
(Optional:  flaxseed, chia seeds, peanut butter, or protein powder)
Blend until desired consistency.  Serves 2
