Time Travel: Decades Ago with City Pop Warner Team and a Long-Since Gone Clarksburg Downtown Bank

By Dick Duez on October 12, 2025 from History Blog

Although the exact date of this photo is unknown, it is showing a Bridgeport Pop Warner youth football team from decades ago. It is believed that many of the players in this photo were on the 1971 team that finished 9-1 with the only setback a 14-12 loss to East Fairmont. The head coach was Guy Myers and it also believed #20 is current BHS Public Address Announcer Gooch Holbert. If you know any of the players, please identify them in the comment section below.
Anyone remember the Clarksburg Community Bank? It was situated on the corner of Third Street and Pike Street in downtown Clarksburg. The building still stands today and is home to the Warren and Betty Burnisde Foundation.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This ongoing photo feature of pictures from Bridgeport and throughout the Mountain State is part of local historian Richard "Dick" Duez's collection, the unofficial historian of Bridgeport, would appreciate any scanned photos emailed to him for use here or to include in his ongoing efforts to preserve local history. You can email photos, or let him know how to acquire copies of photos you may have in your possession, to Duez at dickdo@citynet.net.

I think #21 in the front row is Jim LaRosa, #5 Eddie Furbee?, #23 John Chedister, #18 Sam Painter, #4 John Ash, #8 Phil Nicewarner, #17 Mike Taylor, and #20 Gooch Holbert. That's all I know.

#18 has to be Sam Painter.
