It's Happening: A Time of Change and Challenge, but Also Reflection and Learning

By Julie Perine on April 21, 2020 from It’s Happening via Connect-Bridgeport.com

As a follow-up to the story I wrote last week about new hobbies residents are picking up during this time of quarantine, I wanted to share some other thoughts provided by locals.

The last six weeks has been a time of change and challenge, but many agree it has also been a time of reflection and learning.

More than a few people told me they’ve gained a new appreciation for family time and realize that though it’s necessary to earn money to live, they have taken this time to put family first; something they inadvertently may have failed to do before.

It’s been uplifting and rewarding to take time to teach their children skills beyond what they learn in the classroom – from fishing and searching for mushrooms to cooking and following recipes.

Some said they have used their extra time at home to finish projects started long ago. It’s been two years since Gina Sharps gifted her husband with a map at Christmastime, so they could track their shared adventures. It may be a while before they are on the road again, but it feels good to have it done.

Locals are utilizing their time to make masks, help care for neighbors, acquire new skills through online classes, renew their passion for crafting and devote more time to studying their bibles.

And some said they have learned that it is OK to just slow down, watch a little TV, read a book and unwind; activities that have taken a backseat for years.

Melissa McCall Miller said she has applied to graduate school; a goal she has had for quite some time.

“Also, I was really missing my work as a substitute teacher, so I am now blessed with the opportunity to help my niece Ellie with her schoolwork for the time being,” she said. “I am very thankful to the Lord for these opportunities. He always has a way of turning disappointments into blessings.”
