Off the Shelf: Garden Updates

By Angela Spatafore on March 11, 2026

The weather is warming up, the time has changed, and it’s about time to get busy in the garden! We are entering our fourth year of the library community garden, and as in past years, we are introducing new things to the garden. Be sure to stay tuned to our website and social media for garden updates.

We will be hosting our annual garden prep event on Friday, March 20 at 3:30 p.m. We will be getting dirty at this event, so please be sure to dress accordingly.

Roots & Readers, our weekly garden program, runs from 3:30-4:30 p.m. every Friday during garden season, and the event is open to all ages from children to adults.

Anything we grow in the garden goes home with the people who attend Roots & Readers, so you can enjoy the fruits of your labor.

So, what are we growing in 2026? Some of the plants on this year’s roster include carrots, potatoes, spinach, peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, parsley, cilantro, radishes, peppers, and squash.

Our focus this year is on mobility and accessibility. Our original raised beds are ready to be replaced, and now that we’ve had a few years under our belts in the space, we are updating the garden design to accommodate more people.

The raised beds will be deconstructed in favor of adding grow bags. Putting our plants in grow bags not only gives us the opportunity to move them into necessary sunlight levels but also allows us to move plants onto a worktable where individuals who have difficulties stooping to the ground can work on them.

Last year, we updated the space with a new fence and sidewalk, and this year, we are working to beautify the space. We are adding over-the-fence flower baskets to support our local pollinators and add a pop of color to the garden.

The community is encouraged to come to the garden and enjoy the space even outside of Roots & Readers time! Just please respect the plants and space.

If you need some seeds for your own personal garden, we have you set there as well! We have been slowly restocking our seed library. Be sure to stop by and pick up your seeds.

You can choose up to 5 packets of seeds each time you visit the library, and if you have more seeds than you need, we are always accepting seed donations.

Happy planting!
