After 113 Years, Hartland Planing Mill Inventory Heads to Auction; Clarksburg Business Closure's Last Piece

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on April 15, 2026

After serving the tri-state region for more than a century, Hartland Planing Mill Co. has commissioned Joe R. Pyle Complete Auction & Realty Service, LLC to liquidate its remaining inventory and business assets at online auction.

The sale will be conducted in two sessions, with bidding for Session One beginning to close at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and Session Two beginning to close at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Founded in 1912 by Frank Turner and incorporated in 1917, Hartland Planing Mill operated continuously at 715 W. Pike Street in downtown Clarksburg for 113 years. The company built its reputation supplying lumber, custom millwork, hardwood moldings, cabinetry, and building
materials to homeowners, contractors, and craftsmen across West Virginia and the surrounding region. Over the decades the mill became a fixture of downtown Clarksburg and a go-to resource for anyone building a custom home or restoring an older one — work that earned it a
place on ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Hartland announced its closure last fall, with the Turner family and longtime employees Steve Turner, Dave Mong, and Jim Waugh retiring after a combined 140-plus years of service to the company. With the doors now closed for good, the family selected Joe R. Pyle Auctions to
handle the orderly sale of more than 1,100 lots of remaining inventory, equipment, and assets.

Session One features the contents of Hartland's hardware store and supply operation: paint and finishing supplies, plumbing and construction materials, hand and power tools, new-in-box merchandise, shelving, cabinets, a key machine, and much more.

Session Two features the heart of the mill itself — a substantial selection of quality hardwood lumber including walnut, hickory, maple, birch, and ash, along with woodworking tools, finishing equipment, stains and paints, and additional construction supplies. For woodworkers, contractors, and collectors, it is a rare opportunity to acquire materials and tools from a working
mill of this caliber and history.

Both sessions are online bidding only, with no in-person preview. Pickup will be held by appointment at the Hartland Planing Mill location, 715 W. Pike Street, Clarksburg, WV 26301, on Saturday, May 2, Monday, May 4, and Tuesday, May 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each
day. Winning bidders will receive a scheduling link after Session Two has closed.
