Bridgeport Woman who was Scientific and Research Front Leader, Marion Wormald Grabowski, Passes

Marion Frances Wormald Grabowski, 99, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026, in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Born on September 18, 1926, in Washington DC, she spent nearly her entire life in Northern Virginia before moving to Bridgeport earlier this spring to be closer to her daughter Anne during her final months.
Marion was, above all else, endlessly curious. Science was not simply her profession—it was her way of experiencing the world. She saw geology in road cuts, microbiology in a sore throat, ecology on family vacations, and discovery around every bend in the road. She believed there was always something new to discover and found joy in sharing that sense of wonder with everyone around her.
Growing up in Cherrydale, Virginia, Marion developed an early love of nature while exploring the woods, streams, and rocks around Great Falls with her family. That fascination led her to Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech), where she earned a degree in biology in 1948, at a time when relatively few women pursued careers in the sciences. After graduation, she worked briefly at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution before beginning a long career in microbiology and public health. She joined the National Institutes of Health in 1950 and later worked for what became the Bureau of Biologics of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. During more than three decades, she contributed to research on meningococcus, diphtheria, mycoplasmas, vaccine safety, and other infectious diseases. Although she never sought recognition, her careful laboratory work earned her authorship on numerous scientific publications and the respect of colleagues.
While her scientific career was important to her, Marion considered her greatest accomplishment to be her family. She married John Stanley Grabowski in 1955, and together they built a home in McLean, Virginia, where they raised their four children. As a working mother, she expected her children to be resourceful and gave them the freedom to explore, experiment, and often figure things out for themselves. When questions arose, she was there to help—not by providing answers, but by helping them discover them, whether through a trip to the library, a visit to her laboratory, or an unexpected excursion to see something firsthand. She believed one of the greatest gifts a parent could give was raising children who could think for themselves, and she took great satisfaction in watching each of her children grow into thoughtful, independent adults, each forging a unique path.
One family phrase—"Just this far on the map"—became affectionate shorthand for Marion's predictable curiosity. By following what intrigued her, even when it meant leaving the planned route, she showed her children that curiosity is something to be acted upon—a lesson that has found its way through the generations. Marion believed deeply that family should care for one another with kindness, patience, and respect.
She cared for her own mother and Uncle Edward during last years of their lives. An optimist by nature, she often reminded those around her that “bad news will find you soon enough,” preferring instead to assume the best in people and circumstances. She was patient, unfailingly honest, slow to judge, and not one to gossip. Her openness and humility put people at ease. Retirement did little to diminish her appetite for learning. She embraced lifelong education through classes, writing groups, and extensive travel.
Geology became a particular passion, and she delighted in understanding the landscapes she visited—from Iceland's volcanoes and Alaska's glaciers to the Ice Age flood country of the Pacific Northwest. She shared these adventures with friends through Elderhostel (later Road Scholar) programs and made it a point to take each grandchild on an educational trip that combined travel, exploration, and discovery. Marion also loved gardening and found happiness with her hands in the soil. Whether tending the gardens around her longtime home in McLean or a small flower bed outside her apartment at Ashby Ponds, she found beauty in helping things grow. She was equally devoted to tracing family history, preserving photographs and stories, and, in her nineties, completing a family genealogy and memoir so that future generations would know where they came from.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Stanley Grabowski; her parents, Harry Wormald and Stella Schutt Roe Wormald; and her brother, Robert Kingston Wormald. Marion is survived by her children: John Grabowski Jr. (Jeanne), Beth Grabowski (Jim Symon), Anne Krohe (Jay), and Cathy Stark (Mike); nine grandchildren, Shay, Eric, Zoë, Gray, Adam, Nick, Megan, Kyle, and Andrew; seven great-grandchildren; her dear friend of nearly fifty years, Donna Chandler; and many extended family members and friends, whose lives were enriched by her kindness and example.
A memorial service celebrating Marion’s life will be held in September, close to her 100th birthday, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Falls Church, Virginia, followed by interment at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington. In keeping with Marion’s wishes, family and friends are invited to gather afterward for good food, conversation, and the sharing of memories. Details will be forthcoming.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an organization reflecting Marion's lifelong love of science, education, or the natural world, such as The Nature Conservancy, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, or another environmental or science education charity.
Those who knew Marion will remember her not only for what she accomplished but for the way she moved through the world—with gentle optimism, and an enduring sense of wonder. She taught those around her to follow their curiosity—to ask questions, take the scenic route, stop and read the historical marker, and believe there was always something new waiting to be discovered.
