Fairmont State University Receives Grant to Support Accreditation Renewal for Occupational Safety Program

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on May 04, 2026

Fairmont State University has received $5,000 in grant funding through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) to offset accreditation renewal costs for the Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety Program.

The Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission (ANSAC) leads a review process for various science, technology, and engineering disciplines.

The review is done to ensure that U.S. higher education programs are providing their students with the best educational experience. Fairmont State’s participation in the process reflects the University’s commitment to using data and professional insights to guide student experiences and offer premier academic programs.

Abby Chapman, CSP (Certified Safety Professional), Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of Occupational Safety, said, “We are proud to be part of the BCSP Qualified Academic Program network.

This grant directly supports our continued ABET accreditation efforts, which ultimately benefit our students by ensuring they are prepared to enter the workforce with a degree that meets nationally recognized standards. Industry partnerships like this strengthen both our program and opportunities available to our graduates.”

The BCSP grant will alleviate the financial burden of accreditation renewal from the Occupational Safety program’s budget and will also reaffirm the shared mission of advancing excellence in safety education. Fairmont State University and ABET, the organization that oversees the ANSAC and BCSP, strive to ensure the quality and rigor of academic programs that prepare the next generation of occupational safety professionals.

Ultimately, this funding will assure confidence in the Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety Program as the ABET accreditation will confirm the program has met essential standards necessary to prepare graduates to enter critical science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields in the global workforce.
