Gretchen Lang and Hunter Miley Named as the April 2025 Bridgeport High School Students of the Month

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on May 24, 2025

Bridgeport High School Principal Renee' Mathews has announced that Gretchen Lang and Hunter Miley are the March, 2025 Students of the Month. Below is a profile of each student.

Gretchen Lang is the daughter of Jason and Tisha Lang.

Throughout her years at BHS, she has actively engaged in a wide range of extracurricular activities, demonstrating her leadership and commitment to her school community. Gretchen has held significant positions such as Freshman Class Secretary, Sophomore Class Secretary, Junior Class Executive Board member, Student Body Historian, Secretary of the Spanish Club for the 2022-2023 school year, and President of the Spanish Club for the 2023-2024 year. As a member of the Spanish Honorary, National Honor Society, Key Club, Girl Up, and the BHS Orchestra as a cellist, she has made a impact on her school.

In addition to her extensive extracurricular involvement, Gretchen has excelled academically, completing five Advanced Placement courses in Biology, Chemistry, Language and Composition, Statistics, and Calculus AB, along with one honors class and two college dual-credit classes in Medical Terminology and Sociology. These rigorous courses have provided her with a solid foundation for her future studies in higher education. Her numerous activities, coupled with her academic success and leadership roles, displayed her commitment to maximizing her high school experience. She has consistently made the Honor Roll each semester and earned her academic letter and lamps from the BHS Boosters.

Gretchen has also been a member of the BHS Swim Team, qualifying for the State Swim Team all four years. In 2023, she was recognized as Harrison County High Point Girl and secured positions on the All-County Team 1st Team from 2021 to 2025, the Big 10 Conference 1st Team from 2021 to 2025, and the WV Region III 2nd Team from 2022 to 2025. Notably, she placed 2nd in the 400-freestyle relay at the 2025 State Championships, contributing significantly to the Girls AAA State Title that year.

Gretchen has confidently represented BHS at numerous events and seminars. She attended the HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth) Leadership Seminar during her sophomore year and returned as operations staff in her junior year and as a junior facilitator in her senior year. She also participated in the FBI Teen Academy during both her junior and senior years, where she was chosen to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the CJIS FBI 9/11 memorial event alongside several other BHS students. In 2024, she participated in the prestigious WV Rhododendron Girls program, funded by the Kiwanis Club in Bridgeport.

Looking to the future, Gretchen will continue her education at West Virginia University as part of the Honors program this fall, majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. She has been invited to attend the WVU AcES (Academy of Engineering Success) camp in August, a testament to her dedication and passion for her chosen field.

Hunter Miley is the son of Douglas and Heidi Miley and brother to Maddy Miley.

During Hunter’s time at Bridgeport High School, he has always pushed himself while walking the most rigorous path available whether its community and club involvement, sports, or academics.

Upon graduation, he will have completed 8 Advanced Placement courses, and 3 Honors courses such as AP Statistics, AP Chemistry, AP Language Composition, AP Biology, AP Calculus AB and BC, AP US Government, AP Physics, Honors Chemistry, Honors English, and Honors Biology. Hunter was a member of the Math Field Day team his freshman and senior year where he advanced to the regional competition both times.  He was awarded the AP Scholar with Honor award and the National, Rural and Small-Town award from College Board.  Hunter earned his academic letter his freshman year and academic lamps his sophomore, junior and senior year.  Hunter was inducted into the National Honor Society in his junior year.   During the summer of his junior year, he attended Mountaineer Boys State where he was elected to Attorney General and First Alternate to Boys Nation.

Hunter also completed the aerospace program offered at Bridgeport High School and was involved in the creation of drones, underwater ROV’s, model planes, and even created detailed presentations that were shown to company executives from West Virginia.

Hunter is a four-year varsity member of the Bridgeport High School soccer team and a two-year member of the Bridgeport Tennis team. In his four years of soccer, the team advanced to at least the sectional final three times and he was awarded First-Team All-County for the position of left back his senior year.

Besides sports extracurriculars, Hunter is involved with a plethora of clubs ranging from Model United Nations to The Key Club. He is a three-year member of the Bridgeport Model United Nations and the co-founder of the Bridgeport Chess club.   He has volunteered with the Bridgeport Lions Club since he was a young child.

In his free time, Hunter enjoys listening to a variety of music, playing soccer and tennis, spending time with family and friends, learning to cook, and watching movies.

Following graduation, Hunter will be attending Georgia Institute of Technology and majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
