Harrison County Swears in Newest Deputy, Devarjaye Daniel, who has Experience at 1,300-Plus Agencies

By Jeff Toquinto on September 19, 2025

Earlier this month, Harrison County Sheriff Robert Matheny II officially swore in his newest deputy. And despite his age, he has plenty of experience.

On Sept. 12, Matheny administered the honorary deputy oath to Devarjaye “D.J.” Daniel. He did the honors only shortly after meeting him and his father Theodis.

Harrison County is not the first place where he has taken the oath to protect and serve. In fact, he has done so in more than 1,300 law enforcement agencies. It is a mark that is in the Guiness Book of World Records. Among the law enforcement agencies swearing him in, are the U.S. Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Daniel, now 13, was diagnosed with brain and spinal cancer prior to age 10. Despite being told he had six months to live, Daniel has kept fighting and has also undergone 13 surgeries on his brain.

Recently, his father disclosed that his son had developed a trio of new tumors. Despite that, Daniel remains on the go fulfilling his quest through his admiration for the police profession. Harrison County proved to be one of his latest stops.
