Mountain Mama Magick, Abundant Mother Medicine Gardens & Herbal Apothecary Open on East Main

By Julie Perine on June 17, 2023

Mountain Mama Magick and Abundant Mother Medicine Gardens & Herbal Apothecary have settled into their new space at 202 East Main Street and have big plans for a grand opening Wednesday, June 21.

After an 11 a.m. ribbon cutting, customers will be treated 12-6 p.m. with food by Potluck WV, a lavender oil infusion demo, Oracle card readings by Debra, Tarot readings by Odin’s Rose, infused olive oil tasting, giveaways and more. A special event will conclude the day. Beginning at 6 p.m., the store closes and there will be a summer solstice circle, sound healing, flower crown making and refreshments and face painting. The cost to attend the 6 p.m. event is $25 per person.

The two businesses share space in the same building occupied by SunmoonApparel, which carries new and thrifted vintage finds, as well as jewelry, vinyl albums and more. (The store is temporary closed, but it will reopen later in the summer.)

Owned by Sara Rose Scudere, Abundant Mother Medicine Garden & Herbal Aapothecary features dried flower art, pottery, books, and a variety of herbal products, many she makes in-house.

“I make herbal-infused tea and oils and bath soaps and carry different lines of other herbalists such as tinctures, oxymels and herbal coffees,” she said.

Shelves of glass apothecary jars are filled with herbal blends which can be purchased by the pound or chosen as a tea, which will be made for customers on-the-spot. There’s even a sunny plant room where the tea can be enjoyed.

In addition to her holistic health practice, including reiki and crystal therapy – Mountain Mama Magick owner Whitney Oliverio offers candles, jewelry and a variety of other items, including a Cucina Aurora collection.

“I met the owner (Dawn Aurora Hunt) when I was living in New York City and we became friends,” Oliverio said. “Her infused olive oils are to die for. I told her I needed to carry her items and we are the only place in West Virginia you can get them.”

The space also includes a kids’ room where little ones can play, watch videos and relax.

To add to the peaceful, serene, uplifting atmosphere, the business owners have hired Casey and Justin Elder to paint a floral mural at the entryway.

“We told them what we liked and they designed it,” Oliverio said.

Just inside the door is an ancestry wall, which she felt was fitting.

“When he came here, my great-grandfather opened Royal Café in Glen Elk and my Grandpa Jimmy opened Jimmy’s Restaurant, then Jimmy’s Barber Shop. My dad and uncle opened Grandma’s House in Nutter Fort,” she said. “I come from a line of people who owned their own businesses and I felt like we needed a wall to commemorate them.”

Mountain Mama Magick and Abundant Mother Medicine Gardens & Herbal Apothecary are open 11 a.m. through 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. Saturday.
