Nation's Largest Rehabilitation Hospital Owner Set to Open Multi-Million Dollar, 36-Bed Bridgeport Facility

By Jeff Toquinto on June 04, 2026

The largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals in the United States is opening a new facility in Bridgeport, according to a press release from the company.

Encompass Health Corp. (NYSE: EHC) announced May 29 that it plans to build a freestanding, 36-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in the city. The hospital will be an expanded relocation of Encompass Health's 19-bed unit within the WVU Medicine United Hospital Center. The cost will exceed $58 million.

“This is a very substantial project, one that will likely be in the tens of millions of dollars,” said Bridgeport Mayor Robert Matheny. “Not only are we an economic hub but seeing the presence of WVU Medicine through UHC (United Hospital Center) and Vandalia (Mon Health), I can see us into migrating into a medical hub as well. That means jobs, growth, economic development and more.

“It’s a great investment in our community,” Matheny continued. “I appreciate Encompass for choosing our city and we won’t disappoint.”

The relocation of the unit comes after what was listed it “will temporarily close effective Feb. 26, 2026.” Since that time, those needing the services of Encompass Health were directed to the Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Morgantown, which is on Van Voorhis Road.

“We're thrilled to expand access to inpatient rehabilitation care for patients in Bridgeport and surrounding communities,” said Abe Sims, president of Encompass Health's MidAtlantic region in the press release. “The need for our services has increased with continued growth in the area, and we look forward to serving more patients closer to home in this new, freestanding hospital.”

Although out of the office, Bridgeport Community Development Director Andrea Kerr confirmed the location as being in Charles Pointe. She said it is in the parcel located next to the new Community Care, another new medical facility.

Further details were unavailable. A call left with media contact Polly Manuel with Encompass was not returned.

Details that are known are what the facility will feature. The press release states that it will include “all private patient rooms, a state-of-the-art therapy gym equipped with advanced rehabilitation technologies, an activities of daily living suite, an in-house dialysis suite, a dining room, a pharmacy, and an outdoor therapy courtyard.

“The hospital will serve patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries, including stroke and other neurological conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations, and complex orthopedic conditions. In addition to 24-hour nursing care, the hospital will provide physical, occupational and speech therapies to help patients restore function and improve quality of life. Care will be delivered by an interdisciplinary team of specialized nurses, therapists, and physicians.”

The press release further stated that the Morgantown Encompass location has temporarily expanded capacity to allow for “continuity of care.” There also was no word on when ground would be broken, when an opening was being targeted, or an estimated cost.

Based on Google AI, using multiple sources, they say average construction cost for a medical rehabilitation facility typically ranges from $800,000 to $1.5 million per bed. That would put this project in the tens of millions of dollars.

This story will be updated if further information becomes available.
