Police Chief Walker Says Additional Vehicle Break-Ins Occurring; Locked and Unlocked Vehicles Targeted

Bridgeport Police Chief John Walker advises there has been another series of vehicle break-ins across the city.

About eight unlocked vehicles have been entered and items stolen. These incidents have taken place at hotels and parking lots.

“Hotels have been hit from the top of Route 50 clear to White Oaks and Charles Pointe,” Walker said.

In addition to those occurrences, a handful of locked vehicles have been broken into at Deegan Lake.

“In those instances, someone broke out the windows,” Walker said.

Wallets, cash and other personal items have been taken from the vehicles.

Walker urges residents to always lock vehicles.

“Ninety percent of the time, they’re not going to break into the car when it’s locked,” he said.

Also make sure not to leave wallets, cell phones, cameras, credit cards and other valuable items on seats or dashboards where they can be seen from outside the vehicle. Placing those items in the trunk of the vehicle may prevent the vehicle from being targeted.

"If you leave valuables where they can be seen, there's more of a chance someone will smash and grab," Walker said.

Walker also asks area residents to keep their eyes open, reporting any suspicious activity by calling 911 or Bridgeport Police 304-842-8260.

It is likely that some of the instances are related, but Walker doesn't believe they all are.
