Search, Recovery Operation Ends with Body Discovery

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office has concluded a search and recovery operation at Cooper’s Rock State Forest on the afternoon of Thursday, May 7, 2026.
The incident began at approximately 12:45 p.m., when deputies were dispatched to the state forest at which time the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office immediately coordinated a multi-agency search effort to canvas the rugged terrain.
Assisting the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office in the search were:
- Mon County EMS
- Brookhaven Volunteer Fire Department
- Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Department
- Morgantown Area Rescue Group (MARG)
- West Virginia State Parks Officials
At approximately 2:45 p.m., search teams located the individual within the forest. It is with deep regret that we report the individual was found deceased. The deceased has been identified as Andrew Zimmer, 34, of California.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its investigation into the circumstances of the death and has determined that no foul play was involved.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office wishes to thank the assisting agencies for their rapid response and extends its heartfelt condolences to the individual’s family and friends during this tragic time.
